Fresh off of casting one of the decisive votes to sink his partys latest effort to repeal Obamacare, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will return to his home state to undergo treatment for brain cancer.
In accordance with the guidance of his physicians, Sen. McCain is returning to Arizona to undergo further treatment at Mayo Clinic, his office said in a statement Friday. On Monday, July 31, he will begin a standard post-surgical regimen of targeted radiation and chemotherapy.
McCain will maintain a work schedule during that time, his office said, with plans to return to Washington at the end of the August recess.
The Arizona senator was diagnosed earlier this month with a particularly aggressive type of brain tumor that was discovered during a surgical procedure to remove a blood clot from behind his eye. The tumor is the same type that killed former Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and Beau Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden.

(111,330 posts)and are dedicated to shrinking the tumors enough to buy time. Radiation and chemo are no walk in the park, but if they're using the stuff that was experimental back in the late 80s for chemo, it's not hideous, either (no, don't know the name, just a series of letters and numbers and hairy documentation).
Ted Kennedy got a year out of chemo and radiation. I hope McCain does at least as well.

(111,330 posts)as Ted Kennedy's treatment was, buying him at least a year of good time. You know AZ would appoint some real horror show to replace him, J. D. Hayworth comes to mind, and that would mean a rubber stamp for all Dumpster Fire's pet programs to dismantle regulatory law in this country.

(7,888 posts)Over the decades, I have expressed my disagreements with Senator McCain. He, and or his staff have always responded respectfully. I thank him for this great act of courage.
Why aren't we working to find cures, not treatments, for cancer and diabetes? Simple answer, the pharmaceutical industry.
My father, a WW2 Vet and my brother, Agent Orange, Vietnam Marine Vet were victims of cancer. My father was a victim of brain cancer at Senator McCain's age. My thoughts are with the "Maverick" and his family.
