Thousands Of Nuns Sign A Blistering Letter To Senate Republicans On Health Care

The sisters say they are “united in opposition to the current Republican health care proposals.”
By Amanda Duberman

More than 7,000 Catholic sisters have signed a letter urging senators to “cast a life-affirming ‘no’ vote” on the Republican health care bill proposed in the Senate, calling it “the most harmful legislation to American families in our lifetime.”

The letter ― published on Monday and delivered on Capitol Hill ― asks lawmakers to vote against any bill that would “would repeal the Affordable Care Act or cut Medicaid.”

“The mission of Catholic sisters has always been to serve our nation’s most vulnerable people. As such, we are united in opposition to the current Republican health care proposals,” the letter says. It adds that the nuns “stand by our belief that health is a universal right.”

The letter was organized by NETWORK, a Catholic social justice organization that endorsed the Affordable Care Act passed in 2010 under former President Barack Obama when other prominent Catholic organizations failed to do so. Sister Simone Campbell, NETWORK’s executive director, wrote the letter and as of Monday morning it was signed by 7,150 nuns across the U.S..

... all together protesting, scares the heck out of me.

The following are the Catholic, Republican Senators who better sit up straight and listen to the Sisters:

Susan Collins, John Hoeven, Lisa Murkowski, Jim Risch, Mike Rounds, Marco Rubio, Dan Sullivan, Thom Tillis, Pat Toomey, Mike Crapo, Jeff Flake, Orrin Hatch, Dean Heller, and Mike Lee.

That's 14 people with nightmares from their Catholic school education, who may vote according to the Sister's wishes.

He speaks of Sister Mary Godzilla, who was able to keep tight control in a 5th grade class of 60 students.

with the possible exception of Susan Collins.

(And I don't know about all the other names on the list, but I do know Orrin Hatch is a Mormon, not a Catholic.)

P.S. Maybe some people have nightmares from their Catholic schools, but the nuns at mine were WONDERFUL -- much like Sister Simone.

Most people know the group as Nuns on a Bus.

10. Ask your senators to vote Nay online. It takes about 1 minute to complete

Here's how.

Google your state senator's Contact Web page. Fill in the required information; name, address, topic, and subject. Say something like:

I understand you will be asked to vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act on Tuesday 07/25/17. Please vote against that bill. As a self employed individual, I depend on the ACA for my health insurance and to keep my premiums low. I've shopped the open marketplace and the ACA plans are cheaper, helping me to afford to pay for my own insurance.

I thank you for your consideration. Again, please vote NAY to Mitch McConnell's Trumpcare bill tomorrow.

Easily ignored. The Repubs have no interest in what these nuns say or what Jesus had to say.

most obvious republican who is Catholic, but also one of the most adamant pushing for policies aimed at hurting the vulnerable in our society.

I applaud the sisters for what they are doing, but it would have even more impact if this came from the top hierarchy of the church.

During the Viet Nam war, the Catholic clergy, and well as other religious dominations were very vocal against that war.

It would be nice to see the same thing occurring here

There are bishops who have made it public that they will refuse communion to Joe Biden or John Kerry because even though they are personally against abortion, they believe it is a women's choice.

I would ask these same bishops why they don't step up to the plate, and refuse communion to those Congressional members of Congress who are Catholic trying to take healthcare?

crickets

The anti-abortion stuff started on the fundamentalist right, who have guilt-tripped a lot of Catholics into joining forces with them, even though many of the right's positions run counter to Catholic teaching. The fundies don't even respect Catholics, but the conservative Catholics go along with it. Frankly, a lot of them do because they have other prejudices, or it is in their economic interests to do so. Which is a SIN.

There's a guy who married into my family who is a very religious Catholic and also very conservative. He went to Italy without stopping by the Vatican because he doesn't like Pope Francis. That doesn't even make him a good Catholic. You're supposed to respect the Pope!

Anyway, I left the church because I disagreed about abortion and gays and just couldn't tolerate that anymore. But I did attend left-wing Catholic schools where I learned a lot about social justice. One of my teachers was a sister who railed against Reagan and nuclear proliferation.
