Senate GOP: Knowing Health Care Plan Is 'Luxury We Don't Have'

Uncertainty surrounds floor strategy for Republicans’ health care effort

Republican senators left Washington no closer to a deal on their health care effort, with no idea what measure might be brought up for a vote early next week or whether the chamber could even clear a key procedural hurdle needed to begin consideration of any legislation.

It is a startling admission for GOP lawmakers, who for the past seven years criticized Democrats for what they said was a secretive process to advance the 2010 health law as much as the actual policy itself.

And despite hopes that the Senate would serve as the last bastion of robust debate for a House-passed measure with rock-bottom low public approval ratings, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has kept the veil of secrecy so tight around the effort that even his top lieutenants are unaware what the strategy is.

“I don’t know, somebody probably does. But I don’t know,” Senate Republican Vice-Chairman Roy Blunt of Missouri said when asked what the plan for next week is. Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas, the chamber’s No. 2 Republican and a close McConnell ally, echoed his comments.

There were multiple hearings, town halls, accepted amendments, and OBAMA even sat down with the Republicans.

Just because they say it doesn't mean rollcall has to include it.

The MO for this country increasingly over my life - republicans say whatever bullshit they want, dems weakly at best challenge it, the press parrots it.

Where the hell are the Roll Call fact checkers? Why don't they include the fact that there were > 90 hearings held and I believe 161 amendments (between both chambers) added to what became the final 2 bills of the enacted PPACA.

wars for oil , but never enough for the WELL-being of the American people, when every other industrialized country in the world provides free health care and lots of education for their citizens. Like Edward Kennedy asked, "When does the greed stop?"

Nothing is free. The healthcare and education systems in these countries are paid for by the citizens through their taxes instead of paying for an over sized military. I agree with your sentiment but their healthcare is not free.

8. Of course it's not free, but not to invest in these things eventually costs us MORE in the long run.

But you did use the term free and you acknowledge yourself that it is not free. By using the term free you undercut the principle behind Universal Health Care. Our opponents constantly accuse us of wanting ponies so using the term free when referring to Health Care undermines our argument and reinforces theirs. Better to refer to taxpayer-funded or single payer Healthcare and avoid anything remotely simular to free.
