7.7 quake hits alaska

uly 17 (Reuters) - A powerful quake of magnitude 7.7 struck in the northern Pacific Ocean between the tip of the Aleutian Islands and Russia's Kamchatka, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was shallow and powerful enough to trigger a tsunami but there was no immediate advisory.

A tsunami of 0.3 feet (3.6 inches) above the tide level was observed on Shemya Island, Alaska, in the Aleutian Islands. However, the tsunami threat has now passed, and the previously issued tsunami advisory for the Aleutian Islands is no longer in effect.
