WASHINGTON Education Secretary Betsy DeVos signaled on Thursday that she intends to take a hard look at whether the Obama administrations campus rape policies deprived accused students of their rights, saying that a system without due process ultimately serves no one in the end.
The comments, Ms. DeVoss first on the issue of how the Education Department will handle sexual assault on college and university campuses, came at a news conference after what she called a really emotionally draining day of meeting with victims, students who had been accused and higher education officials.
It was clear that their stories have not often been told, and that there are lives that have been ruined and lives that are lost in the process, Ms. DeVos said, referring to accused students. But she was careful to say that she intends to protect victims rights as well.
We cant go back to the days when allegations were swept under the rug, Ms. DeVos said, and I acknowledge there was a time when women were essentially dismissed. That is not acceptable.

(34,414 posts)the result of "two drunk students." Which "victims" are she referring to? The women who were assaulted or the poor, put upon "boys will be boys?" Of course she apologized for her "poor choice of words", but it tells me how she really feels.

(7,221 posts)Isn't this the role of the Justice Dept., and not Education? Doesn't Justice have a whole division dedicated to civil rights?
What a twat.

(34,136 posts)Very often campus cops serve the interests of the college rather than the victims.
When a top athlete rapes, some campus cops work to discourage the victim from coming forward. In some cases they have prevented the victims from going to hospitals for tests that would provide the evidence needed for prosecution. It's been a problem for decades and the Obama administration rules were a step forward to discourage those abuses.
