Ukraine wants membership plan talks, says Poroshenko

Source: BBC

Ukraine's president has asked for discussions to begin on an action plan that could eventually lead to membership of Nato.

Petro Poroshenko said the will of the Ukrainian people was to eventually join the Western military alliance.

Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said any decision on future membership would be up to the 29 alliance members.

Russia has repeatedly criticised Nato's expansion in eastern Europe and objects to Ukraine becoming a member.

It'll be interesting to see how the Trump regime reacts to this. My guess is they'll ignore it publicly, while privately trying to put pressure on Ukraine to postpone anything, because it will expose the cracks in the regime between the Putinists and the NATO supporters, eg Bannon and McMaster.

Territorial issues will keep that from happening. What happens if Ukraine commits to an offense retake Crimea and Russia not only pushes it back but moves to cripple Ukraine's military? Ukraine will no doubt invoke the NATO charter. Ukraine can then force NATO into a war with Russia to fight its battle for them. Somehow, I don't think the rest of the alliance will go along with that.

And if they did give the green light and started the process, Ukraine wouldn't exist anymore. Russia would do a full invasion and take the country. Thus stopping the process.

The only way Ukraine could get NATO membership is if they recognize the annexation and cede Russian speaking areas to Russia. Thus redrawing its borders. But that will be political suicide in Kiev.
