Source: CNN
(CNN) A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck western Montana early Thursday, according to the US Geological Survey.
The earthquake was 13.6 kilometers (8.4 miles) in depth and was about 33 miles northwest of Helena, the capital, according to USGS. It struck about 7 miles southeast of Lincoln, which has a population of 1,013.
Residents as far as Spokane, Washington, and Seattle reportedly felt the first tremors shortly after midnight, according to CNN affiliate KRTV-TV. Several 911 call centers reported being swamped, but there was no early word of injuries or major structural damage, the station reported.

(86,775 posts)but I'll have to look at some maps to see how close that stuff is to the epicenter. I felt it over 100 miles away, whole me right up, felt the first aftershock too... and I was in a two story brick building. Felt quite a few when I lived in southern CA, so I knew what it was right away.

(12,676 posts)That's very, very deep - far deeper than fracking or coal mining could contribute.
Remember, these are the Rockies - they are created from upthrust pressure that originates from plate on plate movement over 700 miles to the West. sort of like having a sheet of paper on a table, putting a hand on either long edge, then pushing the edges closer together. While there could be some volcanic activity in the area, I'm pretty sure it isn't affected by Yellowstone.
Honestly - I'd be more worried about what the Cascadia Subduction zone is doing than I would Yellowstone at this point.
