LONDON (AP) A British man has been jailed after hitting a Muslim teen with a slab of bacon after hurling insults at her and her mother.
Alex Chivers was sentenced at a London court on Thursday to six months in jail for assault and a public order offense. The 36-year-old admitted to religiously or racially-aggravated assault.
Police said Friday that he approached two Muslims on June 8 in north London and made abusive Islamophobic comments before striking the teen with bacon.
Detective James Payne said other people were present during the attack including someone who filmed the incident. Payne called the assault "truly shocking."

(12,682 posts)I used to see that happy/embarrassed/slightly bemused WTF expression on guys who had gone through a case of Miller in an hour before we picked up them on Shore Patrol.
Usually couldn't understand why the other sailors wives and teenaged daughters were *so mean* to call Shore Patrol when all they wanted to do was say hi at the Division Party...

(37,748 posts)If the enemy inclines toward peace, however, Muslims must follow suit: But if they stop, God is most forgiving, most merciful (2:192).
Also read: Now if they incline toward peace, then incline to it, and place your trust in God, for God is the all-hearing, the all-knowing (8:61).
Truly those who keep the faith, and the Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabaeans whoever believes in God and the Last Day and performs virtuous deeds surely their reward is with their Lord, and no fear shall come upon them, neither shall they grieve. (2:62)
Simple stuff. But I suppose it depends on one's own biases in addition to both the validity and textual criticism used in the interpretation (as mentioned in The Study Quran edited by by Seyyed Hossein Nasr).
The ' stands for a consonant. The one between the e and i if you say "reinterpret" slowly.
"Q'uran" is like saying the "Blibe" or the "Troah" ("Takhan" .
The root is qr', "read." It's the same Semitic root that gives the qere' readings in the Masoretic text and gave the Karaites their name.
Violence was law enforcement at the time; it's still at the heart of tribal and clan and family-based law enforcement. They have somebody else to inflict violence on the bad guy for them. That violence is at the root of law enforcement is easy to prove: Try saying "no" and walking away when you're arrested or when the IRS comes to seize your assets.

Did they actively do something offensive to the guy? Probably not, but "unprovoked" is a reasonably short word and would rule that out.
Where were they? In a grocery store? Was he a short-order cook? Were they in a eatery of some sort?
Was he inebriated? He's male, so we assume drunkenness provides no diminishes responsibility, but it does anyway. It also moves the bar for what's "offensive", opening the door for a lot more misinterpretation.
That's why we countries have courts. But having read the story, we need hear no more--what need have we for witnesses?
Still out on the whole "this crime is worse that the exact same crime because of the specifics of the intent." Always have. Qualified ternary oppositions are always squirrelier than binary ones. Curry the opposition and you wind up with "good or bad intent" U "good or bad act", and one of the pairs simply isn't punishable. Yet.
