Aircraft and vessels are searching for seven missing American sailors in the sea off Japan after a pre-dawn collision between a Navy destroyer and a huge cargo ship. Investigators now face trying to determine how a sophisticated U.S. warship collided with a container ship four times its size.

The USS Fitzgerald was back at its home port in Yokosuka Naval Base south of Tokyo on Saturday with extensive damage to its hull.

Most of the more than 200 sailors aboard would have been asleep in their berths during the pre-dawn crash.The Navy says it remains uncertain how long it will take to gain access to the spaces inside the damaged destroyer in order to methodically search for the missing crew members.

Aircraft and vessels have been looking for the missing personnel since the two ships crashed in the pre-dawn hours Saturday.

Ships are not constantly tracked in real time globally. They were close enough to see each other. It was human error.

2. yes, there's a global /loc map it is very exact. There are warnings /w a collision course & speeds.

though you're probably right, maybe the navy ship was crossing the shipping lane, thought they could squeak past and got t-boned.

11. There are several ways to see other vessels electronically.

They can see the name of the vessel, length, speed, and any intersecting points between your vessel and another. Radar, sonar, and sometimes visual sighting. The Navy and civil litigants will get to the bottom of this eventually. Someone seriously F'd up!

3. I read somewhere that the cargo ship turned unexpectedly and was off course.

But the turn happened 25 minutes before the collision. The captain of our destroyer had plenty of time to avoid the ship. He'll be drummed out of the Navy as soon as he recovers.

. . . do not simply put on the brakes and stop within two cars' length. Takes a mile or more for the damn thing to even slow down.

That area is a BUSY shipping lane, surprised there are not more such collisions.

Still, it should not have happened.The captain of the destroyer likely will end his career sorting blankets and counting buckets of paint at a supply depot somewhere.

At least they can be returned to their families.

7. It looks as if both were traveling in the same general direction.

From the pictures the freighter's left side is damaged, and the Destroyer is damaged on its right side. It looks to me that the Destroyer was hit amidship while crossing across the freighters bow at a very shallow angle.

12. The graphics on the ABC news showed the freighter doing a U turn

after they passed and collided with the Destroyer. Very strange.

YOKOSUKA, Japan (AP) — The Latest on a U.S. Navy ship collision (all times local):

11:15 a.m.

The U.S. Navy says the bodies of sailors who went missing in the collision between the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship have been found aboard the stricken destroyer.

The Navy says in a statement that searchers had gained access to the spaces that were damaged during the collision. A total of seven sailors had been missing since Saturday’s crash off Japan’s coast.

The Navy says the remains are being transferred to Naval Hospital Yokosuka where they will be identified.

It says the families are being notified and being provided the support they need during “this difficult time.” The names of the sailors will be released after all notifications are made.
