It didnt take the Golden State Warriors long to decide to skip the traditional championship White House visit.
Less than 24 hours after winning the 2017 NBA Finals on Monday night, the Warriors unanimously voted to decline the White House ceremony honoring their Finals win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to several reports including one by CNBC analyst Josh Brown.
The Warriors attended the White House ceremony to honor their 2015 NBA Finals title when former President Barack Obama was in the White House.

(632 posts)This is wonderful for Oakland. Two years ago when the Warriors won the NBA title, there were more people in downtown Oakland celebrating of all ages, races and economic classes than I had ever seen in my life together and happy. That showed me how sports, meaningless as it is, can really make people happy. I remember the teenage girls I saw wearing hijabs and warriors t-shirts and very old people and homeless people --- it was just wonderful. Another celebration on Thursday. The Warriors would never go shake the orange liar's slimy hand and no one here would ever force them to. GO WARRIORS!

(2,042 posts)Sports provide community. When you're a fan at a game you're surrounded by friends. As you said, it brings people together to celebrate or commiserate.
It's also a good way to spend time with that right wing family you love but don't want to have serious conversation with 😛

I do think if they are invited, some would decline though.

(16,646 posts)This started back in Clinton's days, with various right wing folks not wanting to attend some event or another because of political differences with him. Hints of it would pop up with Obama, but not so much with the sports teams. Can't remember during Bush's term. I don't particularly like the politicization of this kind of thing. What are folks gonna do when the Kennedy Center Honors program rolls around, not sit in his box?
That said, I do understand that this is a PARTICULARLY objectionable president, and not just on political grounds. Folks of color, gender, and other vulnerable people can literally be frightened by this guy. No, not millionaire basketball players, but they surely know people who could be.
As someone suggested after the whole Patriots situation, maybe it'd just be best that we drop this little tradition. Go back home and have a local celebration. Ain't that what it's suppose to be about anyway?

The team released a statement saying no decision has been made. From Sports Illustrated:
"Today is about celebrating our championship. We have not received an invitation to the White House, but will make those decisions, when and if necessary," the team said in a statement.
Maybe Trump will save himself the embarrassment and dont invite them at all.
