Trump Weighing New Limits on Cuba Travel and Military Sanctions

Source: Bloomberg

President Donald Trump plans to scale back his predecessor’s effort to open Cuba to U.S. tourism and trade, and his advisers are preparing options including new limits on American travel to the island and restricting partnerships between U.S. companies and entities with ties to the Cuban military, according to two people familiar with the discussions.

Final options haven’t yet been presented to Trump, though a decision is expected before a visit by the U.S. president to Miami on Friday. The people familiar with the plans, both outside the White House, spoke on condition of anonymity because discussions are ongoing.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Monday declined to describe Trump’s plans for President Barack Obama’s Cuba liberalization policy. “When we have an announcement on the president’s schedule we’ll let you know,” he told reporters.

Trump has criticized Obama’s deal-making with Cuba as one-sided, and has said it allowed the Castro regime to continue human rights abuses. Obama re-opened the U.S. embassy on the island, relaxed travel restrictions on American citizens, and allowed U.S. airlines to establish direct flights and U.S. cruise lines to make ports of call in Cuba.

Maybe a European country will revive a part of their medieval pomp and give Trump a sword to play with while committing to NATO - if that works they might give him a suit of armor to get him to also agree to the Paris Accord.

Not to mention, POPE FRANCIS helped mediate this agreement. Although I am not Catholic, I don't have to think long in asking myself who cares more about human rights abuses - Pope Francis or Trump?

If I ever met a Catholic Trump fan, I would ask why The Pope worked on so many issues with the Obama administration and why the Pope himself and the man who was the Vatican's FM were seen smiling, relaxed and laughing with President Obama, Secretary Kerry and others -- and so solemn meeting Trump.

Now that people have been travelling to the island, they will be angered if their travel is once again restricted.

People don't like when you take away something they currently have. Guess they forgot all the covfefe surrounding repeal of Obamacare.

"Updated | A company controlled by Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, secretly conducted business in Communist Cuba during Fidel Castro’s presidency despite strict American trade bans that made such undertakings illegal, according to interviews with former Trump executives, internal company records and court filings.

Documents show that the Trump company spent a minimum of $68,000 for its 1998 foray into Cuba at a time when the corporate expenditure of even a penny in the Caribbean country was prohibited without U.S. government approval. But the company did not spend the money directly. Instead, with Trump’s knowledge, executives funneled the cash for the Cuba trip through an American consulting firm called Seven Arrows Investment and Development Corp. Once the business consultants traveled to the island and incurred the expenses for the venture, Seven Arrows instructed senior officers with Trump’s company—then called Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts—how to make it appear legal by linking it after the fact to a charitable effort."....(more)
