Israel Successfully Hacked ISIS Computers; Trump Leaked It to the Russians

The source of the classified intelligence that U.S. President Donald Trump shared with Russian officials in May was information Israel obtained after hacking computers belonging to ISIS, the New York Times reported Monday.

According to the Times, which cited a U.S. official, Israeli "cyberoperators" managed to penetrate an ISIS cell of bombmakers based in Syria a number of months ago.

According to the report, the information was so good that it allowed the United States to learn that the terror cell was working on explosives that could fool airport security by passing as a laptop battery.

Just as an aside: Comparing Trump to Obama

Obama: attended the White House Correspondents' Dinner, looking relaxed, friendly, and cracking wise, all while he had a plan in motion for the imminent capture/kill of Osama Bin Laden. He was sitting on the biggest event since the Twin Towers fell, but you never would have guessed it.

I guess it's worth ISIS knowing for us to know even more details about the background of the information Trump shared with Lavrov. Although the reports about what was actually told to Lavrov didn't include the source, and later that level of specificity was denied. And the first reports said there was somebody on the ground with ISIS, meaning they'd be looking for some spy among them. Sadly, they now know they don't need to do that; hopefully they identified a bunch of suspicious non-spies and disposed of them.

Presumably the next wave of added detail will include the names of the hackers and the IP addresses they used and targeted. Now they know to upgrade their cybersecurity.

On the other hand, at least we know more about the reasons for the kinds of on-board technology bans that people objected to a few months ago, and the likely context in which the classified information was shared. The ones that were dismissed as baseless paranoia. If we'd listened to those people's calls for evidence and why they were put in place, the NYT would have had the story months before Lavrov's visit. "We've instituted these bans." "Why?" "Because ..."

Trump justified the conversation as helping Russia fight ISIS.

Stupidity and boasting is the kindest explanation for what Trump did. A more calculating one would be far more sinister, if he wants the terror cell to avoid detection and have successful attacks. Then, he can blame it on the left for opposing his Muslim bans and use the hysteria to seize more power.
