Roger Moore, James Bond Star, Dies at 89
Source: Variety
Roger Moore, the handsome English actor who appeared in seven films as James Bond and as Simon Templar on The Saint TV series, has died in Switzerland after a short battle with cancer. He was 89.
Moore appeared in more official Bond pics than his friend Sean Connery over a longer period of time, and while Connerys fans were fiercely loyal, polls showed that many others favored Moores lighter, more humorous take on 007.

(13,133 posts)Then again, music can make up for a weak movie and make it worth watching like in Purple Rain. Seems like a lot of stars are clocking out as of late. At least their great work is still around for us to see and hear

(81,322 posts)When he took over the role after Sean Connery, I lost interest in the James Bond films. "The Saint" was different. But his Bond portrayal kinda left me cold.
But he entertained millions and his version of James Bond was very well-liked. And his appeal in that role sure kept the franchise alive.
RIP, Roger Moore.

A lovely automobile.
Almost looks like a Ferrari. Pure beauty.

Condolences to his family.

Yes, I know it's now considered one of the worst Bond films ever, but it had a real fascination for me at that time of my life.

(9,375 posts)My favorite Bond ever. Cocky, good looking, not too bright, sometimes really nasty yet always very charming, and unbelievably lucky.
Moore got it to a T.

(16,104 posts)It wasn't just Sean Connery.
As Bond, Roger Moore put the "great" back in Great Britain! Well done!
Rest in peace, Roger Moore.

I liked moore as an actor and a person and his passing is another piece of my childhood slipping away as I age myself. We are only guest here after all...

(66,388 posts)Roger Moore's Bond wasn't my favorite. (Daniel Craig forever!...)
But he was an excellent entertainer. His Bond films were fun and exciting, which were all that they were supposed to be.
I love imitating the vocal style of Sean Connery. Who doesn't? But I loved doing my Roger Moore voice best; that oil-smooth baritone. My "Keeping the British end up, sir!" always makes my wife laugh.
Goodbye, Mr. Moore. You were a class act.

(14,738 posts)Worth remembering that Roger Moore was the man Ian Fleming originally wanted to play Bond, not the "jocular Scot" Sean Connery.
RIP

(10,476 posts)Which is blasphemy for some, but all Bond material was pure camp right from the start. Connery played it straight, and the results were sometimes awful, such as being disguised as a Japanese man, the moon buggy chase, and so on. Moore acknowledged the camp and played the character as that.
"I've lost my charm!"
"Not from where I'm standing."
Brilliant.

I think it was the Johnny Carson show where he told a story about getting infected nipples from bad water because he had to stay in the water so long for that part. The way he told the story was funny.
Here is another funny interview with him

(17,863 posts)was Live and Let Die. Saw it with my dad when I was ten. Later I saw the Connery Bond movies which I enjoyed more, but, for me, Live and Let Die will always be my favorite.
I can't say I saw the last few Moore Bond's or all of the Dalton or Brosnan ones. My daughter and I have watched all the Craig ones though.
I think Bond was a creature of his time. I actually prefer the Bourne movies now.
I do think The Man with the Golden Gun was underrated. Moore and Lee facing off. That and the superb job done by Kotto in Live and Let Die was the high point of the Moore Bond franchise.
Thank you Roger Moore for the memories.

(9,895 posts)We saw "For Your Eyes Only" and it was the first time I really saw a Bond movie. It's not a favorite for many Bond fans, but I have always had a special place in my heart for that film.
I also remember Moore's cameo appearance in "The Cannonball Run":
Rest in Peace, Roger Moore, and thank you for the performances that made an impression and impact on myself and millions more.

(12,132 posts)mom took me to the movies to see The Man With The Golden Gun.
Just me and her enjoying mindless entertainment. It was the first time in a long while we had a couple hours of peace. No fighting between mom and dad, my little brothers were at the baby-sitter, I got popcorn and Coke.
Pretty soon after that, step-asshole moved in and we never had that peace again.
But I'll always love Roger Moore's James Bond for bringing me that worry-free bubble of time. He'll always be my favorite Bond no matter how much I like all the rest of them (and I do - because that was my first Bond film and I have been hooked on them ever since.)

Some good actors; some not so good. But Moore, Carole Bouquet, and Topol carry it. Lynn Holly-Johnson is worthless. The locales are wonderful. The climax at so-called "St. Cyril's" is great.
(Actually Agia Trias Meteora Monastery.)
Plus, one of the Bond cars in the film was laughably a fucking Deux Chevaux!!
