Hubig's Pies facility a total loss due to intense, five-alarm blaze

Source: wwltv.com

NEW ORLEANS - A five-alarm fire raged at the iconic Hubig's Pies facility Friday morning in the Faubourg Marigny, resulting in a total loss of the building, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.
The fire began around 4:28 a.m. at 2417 Dauphine St. Flames shot out of the back of the building, the area in which pie production occurs.
An employee noticed smoke coming out of the fryer room, where the fire is assumed to have started, according to the NOFD.
When they arrived on scene, firefighters were entering the building through a front garage, but this entrance collapsed around 5:30 a.m. as the fire spread towards the front.

I am so sad to hear this. But I am so very glad to hear that they were able to contain it.

Losing the Faubourg Marigny would be a tragedy.

People are buying up all the Hubig's they can. Hell, the dog groomer was offering a free groom if someone could bring her a Hubig's pie, except for coconut.

They're a local business and it's wonderful that consumers are loyal to their local businesses, but the pies themselves are no different than Hostess pies and are just as unpalatable. I am, of course, very sorry that they burned down, I just have a hard time appreciating the magnitude of peoples' grief and loss here in nola over such a mediocre product.

Moon Pies, and these Hubig pies, are A Tradition Dating Back Hundreds of Years. People ate them when they were kids, they have their kids eat them, their kids' kids are given them at birth. That Tradition Dating Back Hundreds of Years masks the fact that the pies themselves taste no different from the box they came in.

OTOH...if the Goo Goo Cluster factory burned down, THAT would be a tragedy.

I used to walk by it all the time. I am glad the fire didn't spread, but this is still a loss to NOLA.
