The Latest: Anthony Weiner cries while apologizing in court

Source: Associated Press

11:25 a.m.

Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner is crying in court as he apologizes to the 15-year-old girl with whom he exchanged sexually explicit texts.

The judge accepted Weiner's guilty plea Friday to a charge of transmitting sexual material to a minor. He agreed to not appeal any sentence between 21 and 27 months in prison.

The Democratic former congressman apologized to the 15-year-old, saying, "I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse." The judge told him he would have to register as a sex offender.

The FBI began investigating Weiner in September after the 15-year-old North Carolina girl told a tabloid news site that she and Weiner had exchanged lewd messages for several months. She also accused him of asking her to undress on camera.

"In July 2008, The New York Times characterized Weiner as one of the most intense and demanding of bosses, describing him as often working long hours with his staff, requiring them to be in constant contact via BlackBerry, frequently yelling at them, and occasionally throwing office furniture in anger. As a result, according to the Times, he had one of the highest staff turnover rates of any member of Congress, "

It's unfortunate that his issues dragged down so many. Hopefully he'll get help and be able to move forward because I don't like to wish ill on people.

It's not the same but similar to people who with pedophilia tendencies. This is an area that's so undiagnosed and looked at because the instinct is to shun and cull people like that instead of trying to understand their wiring and how to help them away from it.

Addiction is characterized by compulsion despite harmful consequences.

This is a tragic story for everyone involved - just like millions of other stories that affect each and everyone of us.

I hope they all get well!

so even if he gets a light jail sentence and gets all the therapy and support he needs, he'll be blacklisted wherever he goes.

Now if he was a Republican, all he would have to do is cry on camera about how he sinned and that he has gotten on his knees and begged the Lord for forgiveness and then he'll be back in business.

Having had the misfortune to be related to a similar offender, these folks are never far from relapsing, no matter how long they have been jailed or how much treatment they have gotten. Especially in the age of internet porn.

Judging from some language he used in front of the Judge, he knows the program, but "relapsed" as he calls it.
Legally, now that he is a sex offender, he cannot be around any grandchildren/nieces, etc he might have.

Mr. Weiner told the court that in January 2016, he was contacted by — and began exchanging online messages with — “a stranger who said that she was a high school student, and who I understood to be 15 years old.”

Without the investigation, no fake email scandal material for James Comey to steal the election by announcing this crap.

That poor 15-year-old girl...not only does she have to live through the personal nightmare of being an online rape victim, but she's also got to live with the fact she was the victim in the crime that provided heretofore unknown evidence that got Trump elected. That's one hell of a burden to bear for the rest of her life. I hope she has plenty of support.

Why did this 15-year old continue to "exchange lewd messages" - emphasis on exchange - and then she went to the tabloid?

Yes, I know, he is the adult. Still, hard to look at this 15-year old as an innocent victim. Today's 15-year olds are as experienced and seductive as 25 year old several generations ago.

This is not to excuse him but still...

OK, start shooting.
