Ben Carson: Homeless shelters shouldn’t be ‘comfortable settings’ or else people might ‘just stay’ in them

BRAD REED
03 MAY 2017 AT 08:43 ET

Ben Carson, the secretary of the Housing and Urban Development, is reportedly obsessed with making sure low-income residents living in government-sponsored housing aren’t enjoying themselves too much.

A new report from the New York Times reveals that Carson this week visited a homeless shelter in Ohio and was “plainly happy” after he saw that it had “stacked dozens of bunk beds inside” and
“purposefully did not provide televisions” so that residents there wouldn’t get too comfortable.

Elsewhere, Carson expressed consternation that an apartment complex for veterans was so well heeled, as he remarked that it lacked “only pool tables.” Carson obsessively makes sure that poor people who get government assistance don’t have things too good, the Times notes, because he believes that making life too comfortable for them would create a sense of dependence.

“A comfortable setting… would make somebody want to say: ‘I’ll just stay here. They will take care of me,'” Carson explained. However, many residents and housing officials in the buildings that Carson toured this week dismissed his appearance there as a dog-and-pony show.

are working to destroy them from within. Critical processes and procedures are dismantled (or merely corrupted as a first stage), good people identified and targeted for removal, of course funds cut and remaining funds misallocated. Everything to keep the agencies from doing their jobs, thus destroying public confidence in its ability to do so, thus destroying opposition to losing them.

Look at this play out at the VA. Deliberately and chronically underfunded by the GOP-controlled congrses, the VA has had to freeze hiring and, for instance, is unable to hire more psychiatrists and social workers even while provocateurs spread criticism for not doing more to bring down the appalling suicide rate among vets.

And now Rump's administration's just formed a new department to "protect" whisleblowers, i.e., ramp up the supply of ammunition for those working to destroy it, such as the Kochs' "Concerned Veterans for America" and ultraconservative, anti-VA media. It, of course, will be created and be staffed by diverting funds away from medical and psychiatric care.

Btw, Obama is heavily involved in forming a group of attorneys who are monitoring for actually illegal activities and heading to court to stop them.

I didn't know about Obama doing this, but I am so glad to hear it! Even with his help, we are going to be so screwed by the end of this year, we may never get our country back! Democracy is dead now and the trump-lovers are responsible for killing it. I can't wait till they start crying over how bad their lives have become, because I will be out there saying "You voted for it!" every chance I get. When I think about how bad they treated Obama, I just want to strangle them. Republiconz suck!

Wed May 3, 2017, 05:27 PM

"Dead," "broken," "corrupt," "lost" is what the enemies of democracy have worked very long and hard to make people believe. If true, there would be nothing for Obama's group -- or especially us, the people -- to protect, would there? They convinced people to vote for them to "save" and "restore" democracy from the corrupt ruins Democrats brought it to. They'll "restore," all right, into something a lot more like an authoritarian corporate fascist state.

To that end, they insist everything in their way is already broken and corrupt--and must be swept away and rebuilt.

Like the Constitution--which they pretend has already been warped into something it was never meant to be,

The election process--which they pretend is horribly corrupt and keeps electing Democrats against the will of the people,

The independent workings of the three branches of government--which were created to govern of, by and for the people and to protect people from tyranny of the majority.

All the programs that serve the people in general--which they insist are all failing,

The Democratic Party--which is completely in their way and which they insist is corrupt and "out of touch" with the people.

Uhuh. Many of the people who elected those villains believe all those lies.

Obama's group is also called "United to Protect Democracy." But they really mean to protect democracy.

What is United to Protect Democracy?
United to Protect Democracy is a nonpartisan nonprofit with an urgent goal: to hold the President and the Executive Branch accountable to the laws and longstanding practices that have protected our democracy through both Democratic and Republican Administrations. We have seen an unprecedented tide of authoritarian-style politics sweep the country that is fundamentally at odds with the Bill of Rights, the constitutional limitations on the role of the President, and the laws and unwritten norms that prevent overreach and abuse of power. The only limits to prevent a slide away from our democratic traditions will be those that are imposed by the Courts, Congress, and the American people.

Who Are We?
United to Protect Democracy was conceived by a group of former White House and Administration lawyers and experienced constitutional litigators, all with a deep understanding of how the federal government works. As we were the ones tasked with implementing and enforcing the norms that have constrained presidential power for decades, we know what those guardrails are and when those in power may be tempted to violate them. As we defended past presidents against legitimate oversight and illegitimate attacks, we also know how to leverage tools outside government to prevent the exploitation of power within it. One thing that we know about those tools, however, is they require an engaged public—they require all of us to unite to make them effective.

What Will United to Protect Democracy Do?
We will monitor, investigate, report on, organize and litigate against any action taken by the Executive Branch that could erode the rules, practices and freedoms that underpin our ability as a self-governing people to hold our leaders accountable. In short, we will unite with Americans from all backgrounds to use every tool at our disposal to protect our democracy.

The lawyers have gotten hard to work, and this link is to their page describing 16 actions they're heavily involved in. No doubt many more are in the works.

the poorest of the poor ! Thank goodness you are on their case. That will be all, thank you, Benjamin. Pray that what goes round doesn't come round for you. Remember the words of scripture : 'Do not oppress the orphan and the widow (the poor man), or the Lord God will require you life of you.' But what am I saying....? Your country needs you, Benjamin, above all, to sort out those durned indigents.

On a more serious note, the curious thought occurred to me yesterday that the people rendered homeless by the endlessly villainous schemes of late capitalism's worldling Haves, have already suffered a nuclear holocaust - just peripheral enough for them to have survived in what for them would be a 'Mad Max' world.

Whereas, according to Uncle Ben, the poor are the undeserving who should suffer for not being the annointed.

Never mind that capitalism has shipped the jobs overseas or that many of the veterans are no longer able to work, after having been used up by the military.

More evidence of the rampant cruelty and unChristian values of this maladmin.

that's what this is all about. Some folks need to bring others down to feel successful. Republicans always think they worked hard to deserve everything they have while others are lazy and worthless and need to suffer. God wants some people to be prosperous while others can go die in a ditch.

If Repubs are so jealous of the unemployed, they should quit their jobs and try living on these fabulously mythical benefits and see how it really is.

They aren't happy unless they can demean the most vulnerable among us and humiliate them just for being poor and destitute. Republicans would deny the poor everything but the absolute minimum necessities for subsistence living. When a person has nothing, Republicans believe that they don't deserve anything "good", not a decent bed or even a safe place to sit and rest in comfort or maybe watch a little TV.

IMO people that risk their families, health and very lives to serve our country deserve so much better and for that matter so do their spouses and children.

Thu May 4, 2017, 06:32 AM

It is now casually said that we must "make life harder" for the poor, the immigrants, POC, basically anyone not already privileged. It now passes as just a normal thing to say. Jail them, shoot them, bomb them, kick them out on the streets, test them for drugs and make them pay for it..... when does this stop?

I have actually worked with the poor, both at jobs side by side, and as a volunteer in the shelters trying to help. There are nearly as many reasons that people are poor as there are poor people. It is usually a complex of things just with any one person.

However one of the biggest and most common bits is the problem with just how little difference actually working makes in their lives. Get employed at minimum wage and every expense in life goes up more than enough to consume every last nickel you make and more.

Now the republican solution to this is to make unemployment and homelessness more painful, so slave wages will look better by comparison. The problem is that that they do not understand how bad these folks have it even when working. You materially cannot make their situation worse beyond the margins as it is profoundly desperate either way as it is.
