Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Friday that his recusal from Justice Department investigations into the 2016 campaign for president will extend into inquiries into the activities of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, under fire for his ties to foreign governments.
My recusal deals with the campaign issues, Sessions told NBCs Today show. But I would expect not to be involved in this one.
"You would recuse yourself from any decision dealing with general Flynn?" asked Today anchor Matt Lauer. "Yeah," Sessions replied.
Flynn, a former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency who served briefly as President Donald Trumps national security adviser, has been the subject of scrutiny in recent weeks amid reports surrounding lobbying work he did for the Turkish government and a paid speech he delivered at an event for RT, a propaganda arm of the Russian government.

(1,129 posts)What Initially appeared to be Sessions' voluntary self-recusal from all DoJ things Russian related....
Is now described as inclusive of all things Campaign related....
And if this whole self recusal thing was truly voluntary, then he would be the only one who knows whether or not a case against Mike Flynn would fall into the 'recusal' group or not...
Yet, he 'expects' that he would not be involved with any case against Mike Flynn?
Sounds like he 'expects' to be told whether or not he will be including all things Mike Flynn related under his recusal umbrella......
Or maybe
he, uh, say thayr, he jus likes tuh soun all prahhhh-pur an such usin that 'spect not' an uh 'spectin so' kinduh tawlk....hooo boy he do soun jus like thoze hi falutin law yuhrz on the tee-vee .....now dont he?

Sessions finally decides to recuse himself from any Flynn investigation today. Schumer called for it in February:

Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, is U.S. Senate minority leader.
The gravity of the issues raised by the events that led to national security adviser Michael Flynns resignation cannot be overstated or ignored. Revelations about Flynns contact with the Russians and reports indicating that he may have lied to the FBI about that contact may be only the tip of the iceberg. Theres an overwhelming view in our intelligence community that Russia tried to influence our election.
The American people, and indeed American democracy, require a thorough and independent investigation into what transpired and whether any criminal laws or constitutional precepts were violated. Such an investigation and any resulting prosecution would normally be carried out under the purview of the attorney general, as the nations chief law enforcement officer with oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. But in this case, given his deep and long-standing ties to President Trump and many of Trumps top advisers, Attorney General Jeff Sessions cannot lead such an investigation.
[Anyone home in Trumpville?]
Sessionss recusal is required by the Justice Departments own rules and regulations. The department clearly states that no employee shall participate in a criminal investigation or prosecution if he has a personal or political relationship with any person or organization substantially involved in the conduct that is the subject of the investigation or prosecution or any person or .?.?. has a specific and substantial interest that would be directly affected by the outcome of the investigation or prosecution. It is beyond dispute that Trump has a number of specific and substantial interests that would be directly affected by the outcome of the investigation. The regulations define a political relationship as a close identification with an elected official [or] candidate .?.?. arising from service as a principal adviser thereto or a principal official thereof.......................
