Poll: 67 percent of gun owners say NRA 'overtaken by lobbyists'

Source: Politico

By LOUIS NELSON 04/25/17 09:00 AM EDT

With the NRA preparing to hold its annual convention, complete with a planned address from President Donald Trump, later this week in Atlanta, a new poll commissioned by an anti-gun violence PAC found that less than 50 percent of gun owners polled believe the NRA represents their interests.

In that same poll, sixty-seven percent of gun owners polled said they either strongly or somewhat agree that the NRA has shifted from an organization dedicated to gun safety to one “overtaken by lobbyists and the interests of gun manufacturers and lost its original purpose and mission.”

Twenty-six percent of respondents said they were members of the NRA and 74 percent said they were not. Fifty percent said they voted for Trump, who was endorsed early in his candidacy by the NRA, in last year’s presidential election, while 43 percent said they voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton. The NRA did not immediately return a request for comment.

The poll was provided to POLITICO by Americans for Responsible Solutions, the PAC created by former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was survived a shooting at a constituent event in 2011, and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly.

defeat an otherwise great candidate who happens to think more guns in more places is not good for our society, count George Zimmerman's murdering Trayvon Martin as "justified self-defense" in gun data, etc.

I saw some gun lover website where the posters were looking forward to NRA meeting. Several posters' avatars were confederate flags, as to be expected. Another poster said something like, "Hey, there are lots of Muslims and illegal immigrants in Atlanta, anyone want to go for target practice during the meeting?" Another posted how bad the crime is and they better have their guns on ready.

that is more reasonable. Keep the gun "safety" extremists out of the conversation and I suspect there are plenty of gun owners that would join.

stay away from your more draconian measures and I suspect you will get support. But that would mean treating gun owners as rational people and not RW pre-murders so I can understand your reluctance.

don't realize their money is going to pay these lobbyists? What do NRA members think they're getting for their money other than a two-bit magazine. Only 26% identified themselves as NRA members but that may be for the same reason Trump voters don't want anyone to know they're Trump voters.

These people are so gullible.

White wing racist who would never vote Democratic anyway. Just maybe guns aren't the most important issue to these voters?

I do recall posters in our gun control group supporting Republicans in the general election over their Democratic opponents. IIRC the line was vote issue over party, it's the most important thing. Funny thing was the Democrats in those races where pro-gun-control also

"Looks like a great opportunity for the Democratic party..."

I'm certain in your sincerity, you'll attempt to accomplish as much... or at least allege as such.

all of my elected officials support gun control. I would love for every state to be like Rhode Island - we have found a good balance between gun owners and public safety.

What should the Dem platform say in regards to gun control? What does it say now?
How about indicting the NRA under the Hatch Act (or whatever other Act/law will work)?
Do Dems support the study of guns as a disease? What do you want, what will you do.
Discuss.

try "Merchants of Death."

They have turned our country into a shooting gallery,
with us as the clay pigeons.

In many American communities one now hears gunfire daily.
