Surgeon general is removed by Trump administration, replaced by deputy for now

Source: Washington Post

U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy has been removed by the Trump administration and replaced temporarily by his deputy, Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams.

Murthy, a holdover from the Obama administration, was asked to resign, according to a statement released Friday night by the Department of Health and Human Services. The statement said that “after assisting in a smooth transition into the new Trump administration,” Murthy “has been relieved of his duties.” Trent-Adams, a 24-year veteran of the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and a former chief nurse officer of the Public Health Service, will fill the role for now, the statement said.

In a post on Facebook, Murthy wrote that “for the grandson of a poor farmer from India to be asked by the President to look out for the health of an entire nation was a humbling and uniquely American story. I will always be grateful to our country for welcoming my immigrant family nearly 40 years ago and giving me this opportunity to serve.”

A physician, Murthy, 39, is a longtime believer that gun violence is a public-health issue, a view that stalled his nomination in the Senate for more than a year and probably did not align him well with the current administration. He took office in December 2014, and in an interview with The Washington Post four months later, he did not back off those views.

because it means he stood for something and fought the good fight. In this case it was gun violence as a public health issue.

The Trump administration thinks gun violence is good for our health apparently.

one of the first nurses to serve as surgeon general.

Admiral Trent-Adams will for now be in an acting role. As of Friday evening, she had already replaced Dr. Murthy on the surgeon general’s Twitter account, and her portrait had replaced his on the agency’s Facebook page. One of the first comments on that post asked, “Where is Dr. Murthy?” . .

Admiral Trent-Adams may be the first surgeon general who is not a physician. She is not the first nurse, though. Dr. Richard Carmona, who served under President George W. Bush, was a nurse and a physician, and he sometimes referred to himself as the first nurse to serve as surgeon general. . .

Admiral Trent-Adams received a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. She was a nurse officer in the Army and also served as a research nurse at the University of Maryland. She joined the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service in 1992 and served as the deputy associate administrator for the HIV/AIDS bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration before joining the surgeon general’s office.'

in our neighborhoods and if it wasnt guns they would find some other way to murder people.
Mind you I am not pro gun either, in fact I fully support strict laws for them but thats only because I think we should at least try to keep them out of the hands of the assholes just like we should try to keep assholes like Trump, Ryan and McConnell out of office.

opiod abuse. We don't have to get rid of any of them, but controls/education is necessary to reduce their associated morbidity and mortality.

12. I think it's normal for the Prez to name his own SG. So Murthy was no doubt expecting this.

He got to stay on for the transition and cont. to collect the paycheck and benefits. He can now enter the private sector and make a gazillion dollars.
