Tesla Inc. is recalling 53,000 vehicles over a parking-brake issue, the company announced Thursday.
Model S and Model X vehicles built between February and October 2016 are being recalled globally to repair an issue that could prevent the parking brake from releasing.
Tesla said the electric parking brakes may contain a small gear that could have been manufactured improperly by a third-party supplier.
"If this gear were to break, the parking brake would continue to keep the car from moving, but the parking brake would then be stuck in place, Tesla said on its website.

(50,559 posts)Old-fashioned cable-operated parking brakes work just fine. There is no need to change.

(3,156 posts)cable parking brakes are one of the most common non-op items on cars. they corrode, get out of adjustment, etc. I can think of several reasons an automaker would choose to use an electric brake: packaging, weight, noise control, etc.
