WASHINGTONAlmost three weeks after canceling a vote on his health-care package over infighting among his fellow Republicans and the opposition of the Democrats, President Donald Trump dug back into the fight on Wednesday, threatening to withhold payments to insurers to force Democrats to the negotiating table.
In an interview in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump said the White House may lack authority to make the payments established under his predecessor to reduce copayments and deductibles for some of the poorest customers who buy insurance under the 2010 Affordable Care Act. Cutting off the payments could trigger turmoil in insurance markets.
I dont want people to get hurt, Mr. Trump said. What I think should happenand will happenis the Democrats will start calling me and negotiating.
In a 70-minute interview that touched on a range of foreign policy and domestic issues, Mr. Trump said he wouldnt release any guidelines for a promised overhaul of the tax code until a health-care bill passes. He held out hope that Republicans could forge a new health-care law despite the failed previous effort and subsequent talks that didnt yield a deal between the Freedom Caucus group of lawmakers and centrist Republicans..............

Trump wants to do the health reform before tax reform. We have to stay motivated as the Repugs are determined to take ACA away.

(37,648 posts)government can't govern. Bending, instead of waiting for the "perfect" on an issue, is required.
The points on which each side compromises, and how much, is critical, of course. You can't give up your basic principles. Example: Dems should not compromise on repealing the ACA. They CAN compromise on tweaking it, though. Republicans will have to compromise on insisting on repealing the ACA, if they want Dem cooperation. Because the ACA is a principle of the Democratic Party. Repealing a particular law is not a principle for the Republicans, though. As long as they get some money out of that law, that's all they really care about. IMO.
RoadhogRidesAgain
(165 posts)We don't need to compromise. A government doesn't need to "bend" to the will of a party full of racist wackjob fundanamentalist Christians who hate the government in order to work. We should work on working up our own voting base into a frenzy in order win the majority of congress votes and have a dem president. "Compromising" is the song of a coward and only works to downplay enthusiasm among our own voting base, especially with young voters. We won't win elections if young voters feel we will enable the extreme right wing that makes up the Republican Party these days.
What "tweaking" means for republicans is essentially gutting it. Any dem that compromises on that can be assured they will be in a primary.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)Obamacare (the exchange individual market) doesn't work for many. I'm one of them. It is horrible for me. It needs to be tweaked. IMO, it was failing to recognize this that caused many people to vote for Trump, who promised to repeal it, and in doing so, stated some of the criticisms of it that I personally experienced. I knew he was lying, of course (besides being unfit for office). But he capitalized on a weakness.
But we'll have to agree to disagree. If you don't compromise, then you obstruct. Which is what the Republicans did for 8 years, and you are saying that you approve of that. That hurts the country, our economy, and all ordinary Americans. Like it or not, it's necessary.
That doesn't mean you compromise on all issues or on any or all points. But compromise ALL legislators must. That's part of the way the system was set up by the founding fathers. To get a budget passed, legislators must compromise.
The tea partiers won't compromise, and that is partly what makes them abhorrent. If you were around before the intense separation of the two parties, you experienced the compromising nature of our government. Republicans were more moderate and more apt to compromise, as were the Democrats. They each got some of what they wanted, and they remained friendly so they could discuss the issues.
There are bad compromises, though. The ACA is an example. The Dems accepted almost 200 Republican amendments while not getting anything in return. Not one Republican voted for it. That's not compromise. That's giving away the baby.
Activists don't compromise, of course. That's why they're activists. And they serve a vital function. But legislators can't be activists much, since they have to compromise to keep the government running. You choose your battles.

(22,651 posts)I use healthcareDOTgov (exchange set-up by ACA as consumer advocate)to select coverage and made the first payment through that website.
They'll call me if payment isn't on time and help me select new insurance, remind me of open enrollment and even help change a plan. They help me do my taxes, provide my IRS report form to balance payments with my yearly income.
I really like ACA, I wish Republicans would build on ACA and make small tweeks. Instead Republicans want to kill insurance coverage for millions of people.
That move by Republicans will also cost thousands of job losses in health care industry.

(1,236 posts)Reasonably smart people know that the GOP controls both houses, meaning Trump does not need a single Democrat to get things done. But the GOP base does not approach 'smart' in any way, shape or form. They will buy off on this and blame the Dems as well, get riled up and possibly even carry that hate through to next year's election.
I believe he only cares about having both houses through 2020. He is going to bail if he is not already in jail.

Please excuse my language.
ColemanMaskell
(783 posts)Eventually the court would rule that he has to follow the law, but that can take time.
Presumably he doesn't sign checks himself, some department handles it, so he'd have to order them to do it. They could refuse to comply, but then he'd presumably fire them and put in someone who would do his dirty work. Then somebody would take it to court - maybe insurance companies, or maybe the ACLU would do a class action suit on behalf of the citizens getting stiffed. Wouldn't count on the Justice Dept to start the court case, but somebody would.

(24,007 posts)..."negotiation" tactic. Very polished. (Just in case there was any doubt.)
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)First, Americans are mandated to buy insurance. But if they can't pay for it (the premiums are outrageous for many), and if the govt won't pay the subsidies that Americans are ALREADY signed up for...then the ins. cos. will be stiffed and may not pay the claims.
Providers may stop taking the policies from the govt exchange for the individual market altogether. So Americans are paying for something that they can't use.
This is horrible.
I don't understand why "the White House" would pay for anything. The GOVERNMENT contracted for the ACA and agreed to pay the subsidies, whether Congress removed that from the budget or not.
They're dying to get that money to transfer it to the wealthy.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)He doesn't REALLY want to work with the Dems, so is this about getting them to agree to repeal the ACA? They won't.
Is this to scare the Tea Partiers in Congress that Trump might work "with" the Dems?
Pelosi and Schumer are old pros with cool heads. I don't think blackmail will work with them.
singed.dude
(42 posts)This is my theory:
Malcolm Nance described Trump's accusation that Obama wiretapped Trump as (paraphrasing) "the target is getting buggy".
Trump threatening to withhold payments to insurers is another example of the target getting buggy.
Trump knows what happened during his campaign, and knows that the FBI knows. He's getting closer to getting exposed to the public. His days are numbered - his presidency won't last four years. He will be impeached or will resign in lieu of impeachment.
Trump knows from the recent attempt that the ACA is not easily repealed, and may, in fact, be politically impossible to repeal.
Trump threatening to withhold payments is one of his final stabs (maybe his last) at the ACA. His "blaze of glory" as he goes out of the White House.
