Tillerson, Haley issue differing statements on future of Assad in Syria

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Sunday appeared to offer differing views on the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Their comments highlight the degree to which questions remain about the nature of U.S. policy in Syria after President Trump authorized missile strikes against a government air base believed to have been involved in the deployment of chemical weapons against civilians last week.
Haley indicated in an interview on CNN's State of the Union that the United States does not see a peaceful political resolution for Syria's civil war as long as Assad remains in power." We don't see a peaceful Syria with Assad in there, Haley said on CNN.
But speaking on ABC News's This Week, Tillerson emphasized that the Syrian people would eventually decide Assad's fate.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Thursday said the U.S. is considering an "appropriate response" to the Syrian government's apparent use of chemical weapons and that he sees "no role" in the country for President Bashar Assad.
"The process by which Assad would leave is something that requires an international community effort both to first defeat ISIS within Syria, to stabilize the Syrian country to avoid further civil war and then to work collectively with our partners around the world through a political process that would lead to Assad leaving," Tillerson said at a news conference in Palm Beach, Fla.

This guy may know how to run Exxon, but clearly out of water as Secretary of State.
