Arab Leaders Call on Assad to Step Down

Arab leaders are calling on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, promising him safe passage if he leaves the country.
Arab League ministers held an emergency meeting on Syria in Doha Sunday. They said they regret that all Arab and international efforts to stop the bloodshed in Syria have failed.
They said Assad should immediately give up power and that the Kofi Annan peace plan should now focus on a transitional government. The ministers also pledged $100 million to help Syrian refugees. They gave no details about where President Assad would settle if he stepped down.
In Syria, activists say security forces attacked rebels in the capital, Damascus, with helicopters and tanks, while rebels launched an offensive against the government in Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

(135,060 posts)DAMASCUS: Syria rejects a call by the Arab League for President Bashar Assad to give up power, foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said at a media conference Monday.
"We are sorry that the Arab League has descended to this level concerning a member state of this institution," he said. "This decision only concerns the Syrian people, who are the sole masters of fate of their governments."
"If the Arab nations who met in Doha were honest about wanting to stop the bloodshed they would have stopped supplying arms... they would stop their instigation and propaganda," he said. "All their statements are hypocritical."
The Arab League on Monday called on Assad to swiftly step aside in order to end the fighting that has swept across the country.
