White House Suggests President Obama Will Not Push for More Gun Control
Source: ABC News
The White House signaled today that President Obama, who has seldom shown much appetite to fight with the powerful National Rifle Association, did not intend to make a push for stricter gun controls in the wake of the shootings in Aurora, Colo.
The presidents views on this are, as he has stated and as he spelled out in the op-ed that was published in an Arizona newspaper, which is that he believes we need to take steps that protect Second Amendment rights of the American people but that ensure that we are not allowing weapons into the hands of individuals who should not, by existing law, obtain those weapons, White House press secretary Jay Carney said on Air Force One as the president flew to Colorado.
The presidents view is that we can take steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them under existing law, Carney said. And thats his focus right now.
Asked about the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, which might have covered one of the weapons used by the shooter, and perhaps a large capacity ammunition feeding device, Carney suggested that there was no new push for the ban to be renewed.

(18,124 posts)with 100millions of guns in circulation in this country and the black market world, gun control is a fantasy never realized. Never! If the gun sellers are put out of business, the underground black market will always supply the need. Guns can never be eradicated and people like this Holmes character have enough pull and money to get what they want and so does any damn criminal out there. Sorry , just never will happen.

(1,034 posts)The NRA is above all a campaign finance organization.
We must strive to get and keep money out of politics. We must achieve a constitutional amendment that allows campaign finance reform.
The NRA is not about the gun owner or sportsman, but its about the manufacturers, retailers and suppliers.
They devote millions of dollars to their special interests.
"A well regulated militia" should not need such an organization like that to defend it
AtheistCrusader
(33,982 posts)That would be a good start. The NRA serves another purpose, training, safety education, promoting the various aspects of the sport.
Get them out of the politics side of it.

(33,982 posts)If there needs to be some additional regulation, let's do it in a reasoned fashion, not in the heat of the moment. Unreasoned laws lead to debacles like the last AWB that didn't keep guns out of anyone's hands, and only pissed gun owners off, partially costing us Congress, and boosting Bush's election.
Let's not do that again.

(1,262 posts)Obama is amazingly astute politically. But what is realistically possible to legislate has nothing to do with the President taking some political risks from time to time to use the "bully pulpit." He could stand to be much clearer with the American public about where he stands on some controversial issues.
He rarely does that even when he should, which leads me to believe he's really more about testing the wind before making statements that would commit him to a public stance. When he does make a statement, he tends to be understated or lukewarm at best. Just my observation of his style. He's thrown a few non-cost bones to the people in America but I'm not convinced he really has our back.
