Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told senators Wednesday he supports a new Authorization for Use of Military Force to fight the Islamic State. In his first public hearing since his confirmation in January, the retired four-star Marine general faulted Congress for not debating a new war authorization, which he said would show U.S. resolve in the campaign against ISIS.
"I would take no issue with the Congress stepping forward with an AUMF. I think it'd be a statement of the American people's resolve," Mattis told the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. "I thought the same thing for the last several years, I might add, and have not understood why the Congress hasn't come forward with this, at least to debate."
Lawmakers from both parties have said a new authorization should be approved, but no proposal so far has managed to garner broad support. Former President Barack Obama sent a draft authorization to Congress in February 2015, but the full House and Senate never considered it.
"The elected commander-in-chief, both the last administration and the current administration, I think have a duty to protect the American people and what we stand for from this enemy," Mattis said.

To go for YEARS without hearings or votes for ONGOING WARS
is simply unbelievable . . .
and shows that they hate Obama more than they honor or
respect the constitution.
All the troops in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan should demand to be
sent home immediately.
They are not authorized by Congress to be there.
