Hospitals worry about caring for newly uninsured in GOP plan
Kelli Kennedy, Associated Press Updated 1:21 pm, Sunday, March 12, 2017
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) When Colorado expanded Medicaid coverage under former President Barack Obama's health care law, the largest provider in the Denver region hired more than 250 employees and built a $27 million primary care clinic and two new school-based clinics.
Emergency rooms visits stayed flat as Denver Health Medical Center directed many of the nearly 80,000 newly insured patients into one of its 10 community health centers, where newly hired social workers and mental health therapists provided services for some of the county's poorest residents. Demand for services at the new primary care clinic was almost immediate.
The hospital system, like others around the country, now is facing enormous uncertainty under the health care overhaul proposed by congressional Republicans.
The GOP plan would scale back the Medicaid expansion and take away direct federal subsidies to help consumers pay their health insurance premiums, replacing them with age-adjusted tax credits.

(4,919 posts)"TrumpCare" is better, IMHO... He's such a narcissist that he will not want his name on a risky endeavor.
"Don'tCare" is branding for the public, but Donald J Trump is the one person that can/will veto the law if he thinks he'll be associated with the consequences. Obama was proud to have his name associated with the Affordable Care Act. Donald Trump clearly does not want his name associated with current GOP American Healthcare Act.... His surrogates are vigorously chastising any interviewer that uses "TrumpCare" as a label. It's obvious that he's nervous about it... Exploit his narcissism.
We Democrats need to learn more about marketing and branding.

(4,919 posts)He knows this bill is a stinker, and he doesn't want to want it to sully his brand (i.e., the resistance from his surrogates when it's called "TrumpCare" ... I'm suggesting one strategy to defeat might be to tie it to the Trump brand... He'll veto it rather than be associated with it.
I understand what you are proposing, but this is psychological warfare with a narcissist-in-chief... We don't need to convince the public... The majority already has insurance with employers or doesn't feel the the ACA needs to be repealed...
The underlying issue is that the GOP does not want the first black President or the Democratic party to go down in history for fixing healthcare in the United States. That's why they want to break it.
So... If they break it... we should label the new thing "TrumpCare" to let the public know who broke it.
The Republicans label the ACA as Obamacare, label us as the "Democrat" party, and made "liberal" a dirty word. Why can't we play the same game?

tax credits you get back next April 15. You have to float the bucks to buy the insurance before then.

(7,349 posts)TrumpCare or The Deplorable Care Act, plus cuts to Medicaid will hurt those who need it the most: the elderly not quite old enough for Medicare or needing additional assistance with Medicare, an unborn whose mother was unable to get prenatal care, the child born to that mother who needs extensive hospitalization care after birth, anyone disabled, anyone with a mental illness or an addiction plus other scenarios yet tbd...
Did the ACA need tweaking? Absolutely! Certainly not this way tho...

(7,897 posts)Each year they take more money away and the result is to overload the system that is left. Then they say the system is at fault and is broken so they can take more money out of it for tax breaks for the wealthy donors who spend some of that same break re-electing the legislators who voted for the tax breaks. It is a money laundering system.

(5,857 posts)that pre-ACA, hospitals received billions of dollars of aid (disproportionate share funds) every year to help care for the uninsured. That was eliminated with the ACA since it was assumed everyone would have insurance / medicaid. The republican bill doesn't restore that money.

It all makes perfect sense if you are a fascist dictator narcissist. Bannon, Ryan, and Trump too.
