British intelligence warned UK political parties that Russians were interfering with US election: report

12 MAR 2017 AT 14:29 ET

A British intelligence agency has told political parties to protect themselves against potential cyber attacks, citing allegations that Russian hackers tried to influence last year’s U.S. presidential election.

Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), part of the GCHQ spying agency, said it had written to the leaders of political parties offering to help strengthen their network security, confirming a report in the Sunday Times.

“You will be aware of the coverage of events in the United States, Germany and elsewhere reminding us of the potential for hostile action against the UK political system,” a letter from NCSC head Ciaran Martin said, according to the Times.

“Attacks against our democratic processes go beyond (political parties) and can include attacks on parliament, constituency offices, think tanks and pressure groups and individuals’ email accounts,” it said.

These cyber attacks aimed at weakening western democracies must be met with a unified and very tough response.

are all over Europe and the US. Since Russia is a relatively poor country, Putin decided that this brand of warfare is efficient and effective. And did I say, "CHEAP"? Putin is getting enormous bang for his buck by choosing the tactics he did. He doesn't have to finance bloody coups. Antiseptic coups are less threatening. See how easy it was for the Republican Party to enable the coup? See how a big portion of the media is at work busily "normalizing" the coup?

See how it worked in 2016? It was cheap and easy-- and a major victory for Putin.
His work in the US is done for now. He moves on to other countries, but will return to the US for the 2018 elections, just to consolidate his gains. Plans are already being drawn up.

They got away with it and are pretty confident they can keep on doing it. It worked. Pretty disgusting.

because those tenses imply the warning came during the US election, but the warning seems to have been in the past few days. Headline at Raw Story is now: "British intelligence warns UK political parties to watch for Russian hackers like US experienced: report". On Reuters own site it is "UK political parties warned of Russian hacking threat: report"
