GOP House intel head Nunes: Fired adviser Michael Flynn should be thanked for secret talks with Russians

In what may be a precursor of House Intelligence Committee hearings into possible connections between the administration of President Donald Trump and the Russians, the head of the committee claims former national security adviser Michael Flynn deserves the thanks of a grateful nation.
Speaking with the New York Times, where Democratic leaders expressed their fears that the committee wont take the allegations seriously, Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) had a different take on Flynns contacts with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak before Trump was sworn in.
According to Nunes, Flynn is merely a tangent in his upcoming hearings and that Americans should appreciate what he was doing reportedly on his own. From everything that I can see, his conversations with the Russian ambassador, he was doing this country a favor, and he should be thanked for it, Nunes said without elaborating on the value or content of Flynns conversations.
Flynn was fired by Trump in February after it was revealed that he had lied to Vice President Pence and other senior administration officials about his conversations which then led to Pence appearing on national TV and claiming the meeting never occured.

(5,755 posts)Why did he lie about it? Or if he didn't lie, why did the administration claim he did?

(218 posts)Yes, I saw this.
Nunes does not want to call Flynn during the investigation. Setting up the reason by claiming Flynn is 'merely a tangent'. Makes me physically ill.
I have no doubt Trump and his merry band of thugs are beyond guilty, but I'm getting worried if there will be enough to impeach. The Clapper statement was an eye-opener.
The Republican run investigations will protect Trump all the way and cherry-pick witnesses who will do the least harm.
Hoping that Alfa Bank server shows a connection to Trump that even his sycophants can't deny.
AND!! Trump gets his ass kicked for slandering Obama again!

(16,087 posts)Nunes has placed himself firmly in the middle of negotiations between the U.S. and Portuguese governments over the future of Lajes Air Base on the island of Terceira in the Azores. Since 2009, the Obama administration has had plans to reduce U.S. personnel at the air base, but has encountered strong opposition from the Portuguese government for a host of reasons, including future costs to the host government. Nunes, believing he is acting in U.S. interests, has blocked the Pentagon from implementing the plan. There are 650 military personnel and family members at the base. The Pentagon plan would reduce that number to some 150. Nunes' plans for the Azores would actually increase U.S. personnel. He is also proposing relocating Africa Command and European Command intelligence centers to the Azores, also contrary to plans by Pentagon and NATO to create a larger intelligence "fusion" facility in Britain.
Nunes is thinking quid pro quo, he keeps the investigation from going anywhere, and Trump will help to make Nunes a hero to the Portuguese government and his Azores relatives!

(562 posts)Nunes doesn't even pretend to be objective. That's par for the course for the House. Yet, if the parties were reversed, this smug sarcasm would be met with shrieks, pitchforks, calls for immediate resignation, allegations of collusion, criminal behavior, etc.
If I had my druthers, these house and Republican commission heads (Carr), should be specifically targeted, investigated by the media for possible lobbying, tax, or other violations, interviewed and questioned about their ties to Trump, protested, offices called en masse, political opponents chosen/supported for future elections. They need to feel tremendous pressure. It needs to be unrelenting. Other Republicans will take heed. Nothing will happen otherwise.
They're all acting like trolls, mocking the process, comfortable in the knowledge Dems and Dem groups present no threat.
Once again, the DNC and other groups appear have no real strategy. No unified one. We don't have a Koch bros. or ALEC, with their resources, killer instinct, interest, overlapping interests (money), passion, brain trust and strategic abilities, to move politicians.

(27,839 posts)So even if all the Dems on Nunes' Intel Committee walk out in protest, the GOP Intel Committee members will still be able to avoid conducting a real, independent, bipartisan, legitimate investigation, and instead will likely focus on Trump's charges of Obama tapping his phones at Trump Tower.

(24,710 posts)do you f***ing realize that the Russian apparatus is full of f***ing spies and intelligence heads. You also realize since you have access to "classified" intelligence, S*** for brains, that this Russian "ambassador is a f***ing intelligence agent for a guy within and organization that was at one time and his the DEFACTO head of the same "intelligence agency the GRU and FSB correct, or are you that f***ing stupid and are trying your hardest to dumb down your followers in your district and the country------------not happening.
And the head of the intelligence committee trying to do a end run around what has happened and is happening, you should be f***ing Impeached
Your "guy" Flynn, lied, got that, he lied, and now it comes out that he is a foreign agent to Turkey and he got paid working for the Russian oligarchy, and you don't see a problem with that, and he was National Security Adviser for 24 f***ing days, he had access to "classified briefings?
And then your "guy" Flynn wrote an op ed on a man that is in exile in PA, that the Turkish dictatorship wanted him extradited back to Turkey.
You know what would have happened there S*** for brains if Flynn was still head of the NSA, the "guy" from PA would most likely be sent back and executed in Turkey
If it was democrat, you would be f***ing screaming! So F.................

(49,027 posts)He immediately said he'd investigate tRump's baseless accusation against Obama of wire-tapping, but has been dragging his feet and obfuscating mightily about the Russia Scandal.
Unfortunately for him, the longer he takes to "investigate" the Russia Scandal, the more there is to investigate and the harder it is to cover up.

(12,882 posts)I can testify to this jerk's self-serving leanings. Nowhere to be found (in his district, of course) during the last break, there were throngs trying to taunt him into holding a town hall or some such. It's the BIG Farm-a that got Nunes his seat and keeps paying for his renewals. He's just your typical GOP vermin - that's why it's hard to find him in his home district. His slant on Flynn shouldn't be surprising. What did raise my eyebrows a bit was when he was appointed to the "intelligence" committee. Talk about your Oxy-MORON!

(4 posts)I'm starting to think this Russia probe is the long way to impeachment. While it is exciting and great for cable news ratings; spies! cover ups! collusion! and I definitely think Trump is guilty of collusion, he is also guilty of violating the emoluments clause of the constitution. China just granted him a ton of trademarks that are notoriously hard to get, and no one has ever gotten so many at one time. Less exciting, lawyers and tax experts on tv instead of spies, but still illegal and less subject to nuance. The media loves the Russia story bc it means ratings, but maybe we need to focus on something quicker, cleaner and less open to interpretation, as this Nunes story shows.
That being said, I have no idea how to make that happen, other than to write your media outlets and contact your representatives and ask them to stay on the emoluments angle. Rachel Maddow can make emoluments interesting!

(27,839 posts)Nunes and his fellow Repubs on the House Intelligence committee will NEVER allow a thorough, independent investigation into this matter...or Flynn's secret talks with the Russians...or any other evidence of the Trump campaign's secret ties to the Russian interference in the elections.
Our only hope, imo, is that the Senate Intelligence Committee will do a truly "independent" investigation.
