New Mexico appears set to become the seventh state in the US to pass a bill that bans health care workers from trying to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of minors, according to a top lawmaker there who calls so-called LGBT conversion therapy a misnomer, a sham.
House Speaker Brian Egolf told BuzzFeed News, You dont know for sure until the roll call is taken, but we feel confident for the prospects for the bill.
Although the governor, Republican Susana Martinez, has not asserted her position, Egolf added, This doesnt seem to be developing as a partisan issue, which is very good.
The victory would come as religious conservatives have blocked LGBT nondiscrimination measures in states around the country over the past several years, while Republicans have filed hundreds of bills to limit the rights of same-sex couples and transgender people.

(601 posts)I live in NM and we voted for HRC last year, and for Obama both times. Our state senate is Dem dominated now, thank FSG. Once we dump our dumbass repub Governor, we will be able to be a lot more progressive. We have medical marijuana now, but when we get rid of Martinez we'll be able to make it recreationally legal too.

(38,337 posts)They are dangerous perverts who have harmed many powerless people, especially young people.
Sadly, many of them will move to states where their loathsome practice is legal, or they'll find other ways to inflict their twisted religious beliefs on others.
The saddest thing about conversion therapy is that it's like other forms of abuse. The abused too frequently become the abusers.
