U.S. Airport Pat-Downs Are About to Get More Invasive
Source: Bloomberg
While few have noticed, U.S. airport security workers long had the option of using five different types of physical pat-downs at the screening line. Now those options have been eliminated and replaced with a single universal approach. This time, you will notice.
The new physical touchingfor those selected to have a pat-downwill be be what the federal agency officially describes as a more comprehensive physical screening, according to a Transportation Security Administration spokesman.
Denver International Airport, for example, notified employees and flight crews on Thursday that the more rigorous searches will be more thorough and may involve an officer making more intimate contact than before.
I would say people who in the past would have gotten a pat-down that wasnt involved will notice that the (new) pat-down is more involved, TSA spokesman Bruce Anderson said Friday. The shift from the previous, risk-based assessment on which pat-down procedure an officer should apply was phased in over the past two weeks after tests at smaller airports, he said.

If there was ever an example of a completely unnecessary government agency that needs to be destroyed, TSA is it.

(34,138 posts)With two artificial joints I have known I would be subject to more invasive "screening."
If they extend this crap to other forms of public transportation I will take one last trip - to move OUT of this country.
sdfernando
(4,944 posts)Probably depends on what the artificial joints are made of. I have two rather large Titanium mesh plates covering a piece of my skull that was removed due to a fibrous dysplasia tumor. It has never once set off the TSA detectors....I don't even tell them about it any more...just walk through.
csziggy
(34,138 posts)I'm pretty sure they have a lot of metal in them. I have a card from my doctor's office but to be honest, it wouldn't convince me and I'm the one with the replacement joints! I do have to say that when I was called for jury duty the security guys were more worried about my cap than my knees - but they didn't send my through the full scanner, just used a wand - which did go off at knee level.
The last time I flew was in 1990 and while there was not the TSA kabuki theater crap, it was not a pleasant experience. Overbooked planes, no space in the overhead bins (on a flight with no food or snacks they were filled with peanuts ), and small seats. I decided then I would not fly unless I could go first or business class. Now with the TSA added on I don't think it's worth it.
I hope to someday take a long vacation in the UK - do some genealogy, take a needlework class or two and generally have a relaxing time. But when I priced flying two people (my husband and I ) round trip in first or business class it was ridiculous.
Then I priced taking a trans-Atlantic re-positioning cruise - ten days at sea in an ocean view cabin with a balcony was cheaper than the flights! Since they send the ships from the Caribbean to Northern Europe/UK in the spring and back in the fall, that would work great. A nice relaxing cruise, several months in England and a cruise home.
I don't know when we can make that trip - before we commit to ten days at sea, we will take a short cruise. Since we're in Florida there are two to three day cruises that go to the Bahamas or Bermuda that would be a nice short trial.
Right now this is still in the "dream trip"stage but it's nice to have a dream!

(24,054 posts)...in the greater Chicago area over Christmas. She has reluctantly accepted wheel chair service because of bad knees, and whe she heads back home, I take her to the wheelchair assistance area and we say goodbye there. I could accompany her to the gate if I pushed to wheelchair myself, but we mutually agreed not to do that because we would both just sit at the gate and cry while waiting for boarding to begin. The escort takes her to security and it's generally been a no-big-deal process.
When the escort got her to security this time, she was not only thoroughly patted down, she had to take off her shoes, and was even asked is she were wearing Depends.
WTF?!

(6,496 posts)The last time I flew on a airplane my oldest child was a baby (he's a freshman in high school now). I thought it was getting pretty crappy back then. I had packed prepared bottles of baby formula for my son for the flight because I wanted to spare the other passengers on the flight from a crying baby. I knew he'd probably get hungry and also the sucking on the bottle would probably help with keeping his ears from hurting. I couldn't breast feed anymore by then or that would have been an option. One of the TSA agents gave me a little bit of a hard time about the formula. They let me bring it on the plane but it really bothered me that they said anything about it. As if it is suspicious that parents would pack baby bottles for their babies. Oh yeah, my baby is just a front for my terrorist activities. I had a baby just so I could make baby bottle bombs or something... jeeze. Completely ridiculous. Makes me wonder if they allow people to pack bottles for their babies anymore. What do people do with their babies on planes if they can't do that?

(31,405 posts)I used to set the alarms off and get patted down almost every time we flew. Then, all of a sudden, I think they changed
the sensitivity because now my hip rarely sets off the alarms.
My husband, though, is a different story. We figure since he's so much taller and heavier he must have enough more
metal in his that it's enough to always set off the alarms. He got a very serious pat down several years ago at
LaGuardia, too, and he's an old white guy who looks a lot like Bernie.
Funny story, though, from one of our friends, a retired OB-Gyn who is now 80, I would guess. He and his wife travel
frequently from Los Angeles to London where their daughter--and grandchildren--live and he was worried about being
told to stay in his seat because of turbulence when he might need to use the rest room. He had heard from another friend about how easy it was for men to wear a "thigh-bag", and being a doc he had no qualms about it. So, he's telling us this story over breakfast when we were
visiting L.A. last summer, that on their most recent trip to London he decided to use the thigh bag. Well, he put it on
at home and when he went through security, one of the TSA guys yells out "thigh bag"! And a supervisor yells, back, "thigh bag?" And the TSA guy, says, "yeah, thigh bag!" So, they insist on taking him to the sequestered room and make him take off his pants and show them his thigh bag.
He had us in stitches telling us this story. He learned his lesson: put on the thigh bag AFTER he's gone through security.

(4,928 posts)I hate having to go through security. In January we went to New Orleans and on the return trip, they gave me the full very rough "Pat down" with scalp massage (I kid you not and I have straight fine hair, not Marge Simpson hair) and pussy grab too. They also dust me for explosives every time I fly. Because you've all heard about the 5 foot tall, 108 pound, mid 50s, one-legged, Jewish women traveling with their husbands and children terror cell, right.
The only time I wasn't subjected to at least a dusting was when I traveled from Israel. They asked me questions, and were satisfied by my responses and realized, quite rightly, that I pose zero threat to civil aviation, or anyone else for that matter. They of course are trained interrogators, not minimum wage cop wannabes.
I love to travel. This sucks.

(2,769 posts)1. Flying to Raleigh a few months ago from Boston, my plane was cancelled. The agent quickly got me on another plane via NYC that was just about to leave. She grabbed me and we ran to the screening area and she shoved me right through. No screening at all.
2. Now in NYC getting on the Raleigh flight --- I was taken aside and given the full invasive pat down, including swabbing my hands for all the bomb-making materials I left on them. Shoulda washed my hands better.
3. Leaving Raleigh a few days later, I was waiting to go through the screening, when a TSA agent asked me if I was over 70 (unfortunately yes), and took me out of line and sent me through to the boarding area. No screening at all.
