Warren being considered as DNC keynote speaker
Source: Boston Globe
The crowds at political conventions feast on partisan red meat, and they could end up with a bellyful when the Republicans and Democrats meet back to back beginning late next month.
An Obama campaign official confirmed to the Globe Wednesday that US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is being considered as a possible keynote speaker for the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.
It would give the Massachusetts Democrat a national platform for her high-profile race against Senator Scott Brown, the same launch pad that Barack Obama used to vault into the public consciousness when he was an Illinois state Senator and was tapped to be the keynote speaker at the 2004 party meeting in Boston.
Other than the presidential and vice presidential nomination acceptance speeches, the keynote address is considered the gatherings prime speaking opportunity.

(8,812 posts)Not.
The first few days of the convention will be held in the Time-Warner Cable Arena. The last day will be in Bank of America Stadium (even though the DNC is working hard to call it by its old name, Panther Stadium).
One of the great things about future Senator Warren is that she is decidedly NOT a corporate tool.

(14,319 posts)Despite the name on the venue where she speaks, her message will not change. It can't. This exposure would go a long way to counter the millions these corporations will spend to defeat her.

Any more weasel words in that sentence and it would squeak.
Of all the candidates running for office, Warren is one of the very few who can legitimately claim a connection to the spirit of Occupy. As saintly and wonderful as he is (excepting the drones and the prosecution of whistleblowers for just a moment, of course), our Wall Street-funded, bank-underwritten President would have a tough time suggesting that he has any ideological connection with Occupy -- even in comfortable shoes.
Letting Warren make the keynote speech for President Obama would be wonderful for him (bet Tim Geithner will leave his seat to order cotton candy though), but I don't think it will be good for her.

(171,075 posts)They are both apparently into this, they respect each other, their democratic goals are the same, and just because you might not like the venue, or whatever, it makes perfect sense to me.
Warren is a stalwart person who would say "no" if she didn't want to do this. A national arena for her, like Obama got via Kerry years ago? Before an election? Sounds like a dream to me.

(13,616 posts)Yes, I wish this convention were in Milwaukee, and yes, I do think that the Dixie Dinlo Demos I deal with need to be told that they are in danger of being cast out, but all the same, Warren is EXACTLY the person we need to frame the message. The contrast between The demos and the sheer gibbering hate fest Tampa will be should freak the "independents" over to our side.

I can't wait.
Hopefully Warren gets in and leads a revolution of FDR Democrats to take back our party.

?So-called right-to-work states have lower wages.
Good wages and benefits are key to quality of life both to support families and to provide a reliable tax base for education, infrastructure and public services. Yet the annual median income in right-to-work states is $6,185 less than in other states, according to 2009 U.S. Census Bureau data.
Whats more, these anti-union states tend to have higher poverty rates, less access to health care and lower-performing schools. In the Annie E. Casey Foundations well-respected Kids Count survey, the three worst states for children are in right-to-work states and the three best all allow workers to form strong unions.
Would you rather have your child go to the University of Wisconsin or the University of Mississippi? Would you prefer to raise a family in Mississippi, where the 2009 child poverty rate was 31%, or in Wisconsin, where it was 16.7%?

(40,416 posts)As others here have observed, an FDR Democrat, where government is a partner of the solution, not the enemy.
We are fighting a memetic war, a war of ideas. The extent to which Democrats do not understand the battle as such, is the extent to which we are not going to win.
However, some Democrats -- in IN, NE, and other so-called red states -- are here considered to be less politically pure, and are regularly maligned here on DU.
The issue here is:
The expectation that all Democrats should be FDR Democrats very much sounds like the idiotic ideological purity that Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson layed down in the 70's and 80's for the Republican party. It is precisely this demanded purity which sets us apart from our opponents.
One can see it in every issue. Women's health? No! Because women might want to have sex! LGBT rights? No! People will want to marry octopuses. Tax fairness? Fuck that. Then the big wheels will no longer be big wheels.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
Warren may help bring FDR democracy back to the US.

(10,857 posts)I had it wrong. Ann Richards was the keynote speaker in 1988, while Bill Clinton bombed the nomination speech that year and at least one snide kid with no sense of irony was sure it would be the last he ever saw of that guy.
Other keynote speakers didn't work out nearly as well as Ann Richards or Barack Obama. Zell Miller delivered a keynote address in '92, before anyone knew he was Darth Sidious. Others, like Harold Ford, Jr. and Mario Cuomo, seemed to change their minds about things after the speech and slowly backed away.
