Romney's Obama attack gets sidetracked

Last edited Thu Jul 19, 2012, 10:05 PM - Edit history (2)

Source: CBS

(ROXBURY, Mass.) - After two consecutive days of strong attacks on President Obama for his comments touting government's role in fostering new businesses, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's message was decidedly more muddled on Thursday when a local television station here reported that one of the local entrepreneurs selected to illustrate Romney's point got help from local government.

On a campaign stop, Romney sought to rebut Obama by highlighting the success of an auto repair shop started by a local entrepreneur. "This is not the result of government," Romney told reporters, referring to Middlesex Truck & Coach after he toured the shop. "This is the result of people who take risk, who have dreams, who build for themselves and for their families."

Company owner Brian Maloney, 69, agreed with Romney's assessment. "I take umbrage at the suggestion that people don't start and build businesses," Maloney said. "I started out with 500 bucks and worked with my hands to afford grad school at night. My wife supported me. Started a little body shop and was able to bring together people, one at a time."

But in an interview with Boston-based reporter Jon Keller of WBZ-TV, Maloney acknowledged that his business received some government help. "The only way I was able to come here, because I had no money, was with an industrial revenue bond," Maloney said in the interview. Industrial revenue bonds are typically issued by local and state governments to attract new business to an area. They create low-interest loans for new development and startups.

Didn't we all know this would happen?

I worked the Dukakis campaign. Good man, TOTALLY inept campaign. Romney's campaign people might just be worst. These folks don't seem to check anything. I'm getting serious chuckles out of (and wondering why even Ed, Rachel, Lawrence, et al, haven't jumped all over this) how one of his campaign workers can make the statement that he did pay taxes in '09 to try and diffuse the speculation that he paid no taxes that year. So this means his campaign workers have seen his tax returns, but we can't? Huh?

Mr. Romney's arguments were dead in the water even before he misrepresented the President's words.

Take this mechanic for example.

Even if he didn't need government assistance to start his business his business and most like it would be impossible without the support of all of us through our government which rules us at our behest through our Constitution.

Did this man have an education? Chances are it was public. Did this man's children have educations? Chances are they were public.

He says "his wife supported him". How? Was she by chance a public employee?

And how about his business (like my business and all businesses)? Did he accept only customers who didn't work for public sector jobs? Did he have a sign out front saying "Self Made Men Only!"? Did his sign say no service personal or their dependents?

And these self made customers, did they drive there off road, since roads are made with public money?

Did they have to dodge the roving gangs and desperadoes in a police-less state?

Were their cars never built with government assistance or subsidies? No Chryslers and no GM products accepted?

Did this man have to hire a private guard to protect his business when he was absent, for example at night? If he needed the fire service, did he put out his own fires?

Did he lay the pipe and bring in his own water and gas? Did he string the wires and bring in his own electricity? Did he do without any of the public services provided by the "government"?

Did he bank his money in a federally insured bank or did he just keep it in his pocket until he needed it?

Did he organize a military to protect him and only those like him?

If you're are going to accuse the President of not "getting it" or "hating freedom" or wanting to "destroy America" perhaps you should consider his words in context, not only what Mr. Romney wants you to think he said or meant.

Or perhaps you just are ashamed that a black man is representing America and you want your country back.

Were it not for publicly-funded roads, who would own a car or a bus or a truck? If it weren't for the vast web of taxpayer-financed roadways, this guy wouldn't have a business. His very livelihood is underpinned by trillion of dollars in federal, state, and local entities who make sure there are decent roads, which causes people to purchase automobiles, which create his customer base.

They say this insanely idiotic shit, which they ought to know is just plain over-the-top hyperbole, but then they try to PROVE IT.

My dumbass governor in Wisconsin tweets (and do you not have any-fucking-thing else to do, dude) that if the government had been involved, Noah would have never built the ark.

Yeah, but Noah could have dug the Erie Canal, built the Transcontinental Railroad, erected Hoover Dam, developed the Interstate Highway System, landed a man on the moon and created the internet.

Dumbassses, every last one of them.

Fri Jul 20, 2012, 09:31 AM

I'm surrounded by many such people who own or manage the business started by their father or grandfather. If the business is in good shape, they act like it's all because of them, like the efforts of their parents or grandparents to start up and run the business was not a factor. They act like the success of the business is all because of them. Quite honestly, I don't know what these people would be doing today if they didn't inherit the business and the job that came with it.

Never mind that the business was started by their parents or grandparents when tax rates were higher. Funding from federal or state aid was more plentiful then, and most of them took advantage of it. If they served in the military, the GI Bill certainly didn't hurt them either.

It's the classic Ann Richards line about being born on third base and acting like they hit a triple.

"I take umbrage at the suggestion that people don't start and build businesses," Maloney said.

That's NOT what Obama suggested. He suggested that people don't start and build businesses BY THEMSELVES, because it requires the direct or indirect help of OTHER people whether they're members of the government or not -- "SOMEBODY ELSE made that happen."

"I started out with 500 bucks..."

Unless you were born holding it in your hands, Mr. Maloney, you DID NOT "start out" with 500 bucks. "Somebody else" either gave you that money, bequeathed it to you, loaned it to you, or allowed you to earn it. If you found it, it's because "somebody else" lost it -- unless you found "somebody else" to steal it from!

"...and worked with my hands..."

"Somebody else" taught you how to work with your hands (either in person or through instructional materials), and "somebody else" invented and produced whatever tools you used.

"...to afford grad school at night."

"Somebody elses" developed your school, hired the teachers, set the curriculum, and decided to accept you. Not to mention the "somebody elses" who taught you how to read and write, and the "somebody elses" who taught THEM how to read and write -- and teach!

"My wife supported me."

By "supporting" you, do you mean that the "somebody else" you're married to gave you moral support, worked with you at building your business, or got herself hired by "somebody else" to provide a supplementary income?

"Started a little body shop and was able to bring together people, one at a time..."

"Somebody else" helped you obtain your body shop's office space, suppliers, subcontractors, equipment, business cards, insurance, advertising, marketing. When business got so good you that could no longer do all the work yourself, you hired "somebody elses" as employees. And of course, let's not forget the most important "somebody elses" of all -- the people who bought your products and services at a large enough volume that you can consider yourself successful.

And never mind the "somebody elses" in the government who organized the building of the roads -- what if "somebody else" HADN'T invented cars in the first place?

in response to a some wingnut slamming the President.

by WhttevrrWorks July 20, 2012 2:31 PM EDT
What he means by that statement is to get off your egotistical high horse and learn what it means to acknowledge those who have helped you become what you are today. You are the sum of all your experiences - from the teacher that helped you learn your first lessons in school to the police and firefighters who protect you.

If you were dropped off on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere you would be lucky to be able to feed yourself. You of and by yourself would not be able to smelt the metals needed to create an infrastructure upon which you have gained tremendous benefits. You by yourself would not be able to create a computer out of sand and trees to spew your ignorant hate onto the pages of the internet. Because there would be no internet until you yourself created it.

What he means by that statement is that no one person created the world we exist in. Our world is an amalgamation of all that went before us and will carry on long after we leave this earth. So for once in your pathetic life, acknowledge the love, support, and hard work of others that allowed you to be such an arrogant prick today.
