H.R. McMaster Breaks With Administration on Views of Islam

Source: New York Times

President Trump’s newly appointed national security adviser has told his staff that Muslims who commit terrorist acts are perverting their religion, rejecting a key ideological view of other senior Trump advisers and signaling a potentially more moderate approach to the Islamic world.

The adviser, Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, told the staff of the National Security Council on Thursday, in his first “all hands” staff meeting, that the label “radical Islamic terrorism” was not helpful because terrorists are “un-Islamic,” according to people who were in the meeting.

That is a repudiation of the language regularly used by both the president and General McMaster’s predecessor, Michael T. Flynn, who resigned last week after admitting that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other officials about a phone call with a Russian diplomat.

It is also a sign that General McMaster, a veteran of the Iraq war known for his sense of history and independent streak, might move the council away from the ideologically charged views of Mr. Flynn, who was also a three-star Army general before retiring.

McMaster is someone who could have served very comfortably in the Obama administration. I hope he gains the clear upper hand against Bannon and Co., and sooner rather than later.

even by TAKING it.

I rather expect the military in the trump 'administration' to go a long way to saving us all, tho in a different manner than might be historically expected.

she originally refused the transgender issue, but forced with the possibility of being fired. she went alone with it. Naturally she's a women I guess he can push women around. Not sure if he can push this one around. Sexist ? Very. But still not easy to push this one around..

I'm trying to wrap my head around Trump insisting it's ISIS the Egyptian Goddess of Marriage and not ISIL of which both items are out of date. It's either IS, or if you wanna piss them off as John Kerry would often do. Call them Daesh (which is something akin to calling terrorists a bunch of morons. and they hate that word) If Trump wants to do what the Daesh want him to do thats just wonderful

“Radical Islamic terrorism” has been a fetish term for the GOP since Obama came into office. It is a meme they created that was pounded and pounded over and over by the lunatics that came into office in the teabagger wave and it became a litmus test phrase fully embraced and promoted by the GOP. They will not get rid of it.

...or his appointment was a strategic move to show a more rational side of cheeto's admin. The later won't work of course. cheeto can't keep his ignorant mouth shut and then there's Bannon.

I guess those who pervert Christianity are not capable of recognizing when someone perverts another religion.

a failed coup attempt against a president and his loyal entourage. I'm going to have to re-read the book and watch the movie again; I always interpreted it as an allegory about a very-popular Douglas MacArthur and a relatively-upopular POTUS Harry S. Truman.
