Young Immigrants Are Too Afraid To Apply For College In California

Source: International Business Times

Students applications for the California Dream Act, which allows undocumented students to receive state financial aid and pay in-state tuition, has gone down by more than 60 percent this year compared to last year amid growing concerns over federal immigration policy changes, state authorities said Wednesday.

Patti Colston, communications manager for the California Student Aid Commission, said only 17,819 applicants were received as of Friday, compared with 46,731 last year. With the numbers dropping, authorities blamed fear and confusion over President Donald Trump's controversial immigration policies. Colston said while a scientific survey was not conducted to determine the reason, undocumented students were afraid of sharing their personal information.

"The numbers are down so much that we believe there may be some confusion with the California Dream Act and DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)," Colston said, referring to the program started under former President Barack Obama in 2012 that allows eligible undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to obtain work permits and postpone deportation for up to two years at a time.

She said California education officials will protect student information. "This is funded by state funds. All of the data is processed here, and we do not send any data to the federal government," Colston said.

Police chief blasts Homeland Security over secret ICE raid
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10141711600

The Santa Cruz Police Department teamed up with Homeland Security to conduct a gang raid on Feb. 13. Ten suspected MS-13 gang members were arrested. Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel said he only agreed to work with federal agents because he was assured several times that immigration detentions and deportations would have no part in the operation, and only violent MS-13 gang members would be arrested.

Vogel said Homeland Security lied. In the days following the raid, ICE eventually admitted to police that some residents who had not committed any crimes were detained and taken to a Homeland Security facility because they were illegal immigrants.

universities there. She told me that the day after the election, several students came to her, crying. They are afraid that they, or their parents, will be deported. She did not have any way to reassure them, with things so uncertain.

She is not lecturing this semester because she has a different job with the university. I did not get a chance to ask her if enrollment is down at her location. I have a feeling it is.

I curse this trump creature for destroying so many lives and dreams.

I would think the universities could challenge deportation on the same basis that the travel ban lawsuits used legally--that its affecting their business and income if their student enrollment is down because of it.

...for dreamers went down this year in CA to 17,000 something versus nearly 40,000 something last year. The students are afraid to apply for fear that the Trump regime will get their personal data. California univerisities have assured them that there data is protected/ private and won't be shared with the regime and is encouraging them to apply.

An uneducated work force. Helps clarify the meaning of "make America great again" - nothing more than a campaign slogan.
