Norwegian Air to offer U.S.-Europe fares starting at $65 one way

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA plans to offer transatlantic flights on 10 new routes between the United States and Europe with tickets starting at $65 one way, putting pressure on U.S. and European rivals to compete, it said on Thursday.

Norwegian is expanding its network of flights to the United States starting in mid-June after receiving long-awaited U.S. approval in December for its Irish subsidiary Norwegian Air International to operate routes across the Atlantic.

Established U.S. carriers have been forced to consider restricted cheaper fares and redesigned cabins with more seats to win budget-conscious travelers to compete with Norwegian and rival Icelandic carrier Wow Air.

Norwegian's $65 fares will be for a one-way ticket to UK and Irish destinations from smaller airports in New York state, Providence, Rhode Island, and Hartford, Connecticut.

1. That's $65 before Government fees and taxes at each end.

2. That's for a seat. No service, no luggage, no sitting with others in your party.

3. That's for an airport somewhere in the USA and somewhere in Europe. LCCs keep cost low by using obscure airports as much as 100 miles from a major destination.

A very good deal. $1160 roundtrip total for both of us ($580 each!) from Oakland to Gatwick, and that included 2 checked bags, meals and reserved seats, which all cost extra!

Boston to London and then we returned to Boston from Paris. For the 4 of us it was just a bit over 2 grand, and that's with almost 4 weeks worth of luggage.

We flew nonstop from Portland, Oregon to Reykjavik, then on to London. It was a 13+-hour flight, and they served us NOTHING. No beverages, no peanuts, no pretzels - NOTHING. We will never fly them again!

They put an immediate alert out, found it and mailed it from Reykjavik to Florida. Very comfortable, new jet.

and not be crammed into steerage. I also like being able to choose my seat, be fed, check luggage and earn miles so that I get better services offered.

I may have found my August vacation! A two week walking tour of Wales is looking less and less expensive.
