Kansas Republican Gov. Sam Brownback suffered a major defeat on Wednesday after the Kansas House of Representatives voted to override his veto of the legislatures tax hikes aimed at filling massive gaps in the state budget.
Jonathan Shorman, a reporter for the Topeka Capital-Journal, Link to tweet
" target="_blank">reports that the Republican-controlled Kansas House voted to override Brownbacks veto by a margin of 85-40. The override measure will now move over to the Republican-controlled Kansas Senate.

The Kansas City Star notes that the tax hike legislation, passed by both the Kansas House and Senate this year, would raise income tax rates and end a tax exemption for roughly 330,000 business owners.
Kansass state budget has been in disarray ever since Brownback and the Kansas legislature slashed taxes starting in 2012, as revenue for the state has routinely fallen well short of projections.

(58,785 posts)signals that right-wing extremists are nearing the end of their run. Koch-country KS was pulled more extremely right and earlier than many other places.
This graph is for House Republicans, who were mostly assisted to office by people like the Kochs, but Senate Republicans are only somewhat less extreme. They ALL are far more conservative than ever in American history and significantly more extremist than the conservative voters they pretend to represent.

(2,191 posts)The repeal of his tax breaks didn't pass with a veto-proof majority, but I did wonder if the legislators might be angry if he vetoed it. Good for (some of) them!

It's been nice paying Kansas $0 in taxes, but I"ll gladly take the hit. Brownback had ruined my home state.

(15,290 posts)While their legislature remains in GOP control, there are many more traditional conservatives than rw nuts like Brownback. The voters also elected a majority D state supreme court, too. It was only a matter of time before Brownback's disasterous economic policies began to be rolled back.

(6,932 posts)I wonder and have doubts but who knows, they might get a spine and do what's right. There are 40 Senators,32 Repub and 8 Dems. This isn't over yet but it keeps crawling closer and closer. They need a 2/3 majority.
If it doesn't get overturned we'll have a shortfall of about $800-900M in fiscal 2019 which starts July 1,2018. Brokeback doesn't care, all he wants to do is run the clock out seeing how he can't run again.

(31,997 posts)ecause of his mess our school district had to close several schools and programs.
I have had Crohn's disease for 10 years. Have been in the hospital several times almost died more than once.
6 years ago I was put at a program for "last chance" kiddos. It was perfect for me and the Crohn's. Low student to teacher ratio and planning time to work with chemo time and I was getting a lot better...doctor even mentioned remission.
Last year the program was gutted specifically due to Brownstain and his damned budget. Back into a large school with almost 200 students daily and it seemed most of those students acted a lot worse than my "bad kids" and most of the time there were no consequences. I had a kid cut his pubic hair in class and I was called down for sending that kid out.
Well, in Nov I got super sick and many thought I wouldn't last to Christmas. I got some time off and was able to have a couple of procedures and changed medicine and am slowly getting better. I am due to return to work after spring break and hopefully I can last the 9 weeks.
I blame brownback and his god damned tax plan for all of it
