Scarborough: Only a 'fake president' would call press the enemy
Source: The Hill
MSNBCs Joe Scarborough on Friday blasted President Trump's tweet about the media, calling the the commander-in-chief a "fake president" for attacking the press.
"Only a FAKE PRESIDENT would declare the First Amendment to be the enemy of the American people," Scarborough tweeted.
Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) February 17, 2017
Minutes earlier, Trump berated the "fake news media," tweeting that the press "is the enemy of the American People."

No matter what Trump does he will find away to blame Obama,Clintons,Carter and tries to say they were as bad as Trump, all the while skipping Reagan and Ollie North and the Iran Contra scandal.

(37,648 posts)This fixation that Trump has on the press is unAmerican and undemocratic. It's one of the few way the public gets information that the politicians don't want us to know.
He is attacking our democracy when he attacks the free press.
It is JUST like the SNL Alec Baldwin debate skit, when Tom Hanks as Anderson Cooper asks Trump (Baldwin) how the press is unfair to him.
Trump (Baldwin) says, "They take everything I say and everything I do, and put it on television."
bucolic_frolic
(43,287 posts)but Trump is at war with the side of the press that tells the truth
So a finer distinction must be drawn between various elements of the press
This simple idea Trump is peddling that they're all the same is a false choice
starshine00
(531 posts)but Russia doesn't have separation of powers or a free press and the US generally doesn't disappear people at the rate that Russia does when they step out of line, i.e. that shit is not going to fly over here because there is no KGB type org (sorry I can't remember what they are called now) to enforce it

(531 posts)I swear it is as if he thinks he IS Putin...he keeps pissing off the press and the CIA both, repeatedly, two entities which can ruin him...he is incredibly delusional about how much power he wields. (Though I did just spend a few minutes on twitter reading the most amazing tweets from his MAGAuthoritarians, they literally lap up everything that comes out of his mouth as gospel...he seems to have provided for them the big bad Daddy figure they have always craved in life or something, it is positively scary.

(14,587 posts)I believe he had some hope that Trump might change things, but to his credit he also changed his mind when it became apparent that the electoral college elected a madman.
This gives us some insight into where he is coming from. Scarborough is an old-school guy who genuinely believes in market solutions, and has, as many of these free-market people, downplayed the excesses inherent in capitalism.
However, when these people yell 'deregulate, privatize and gut social programs' long enough to where it begins happening, then they don't like the result too very much.
This is the thing I've always said about the libertarians. Their philosophy is quite seductive until it is you who are down and they look on and let you suffer and die, because hey, that's your right. And the capitalistic meme that we all must pull ourselves up by our bootstraps is just as bad because if we aren't rich, then we experience that self-doubt that we somehow 'didn't work hard enough,' and the disgust with ourselves and others for making this such a dog-eat-dog culture.
Spiritually and economically, there is no doubt in my mind that we would be better if we could as a species figure out how to organize ourselves around human need instead of human greed.
Boy, LOL, I sure got off on a tangent there.

(14,587 posts)And it is true, from the angle you seem to be coming, that there is a 'right wing crazy' element we're just going to have to roll over. But the rest? The independents? The people who tend to vote R because they don't know any better?
And YES, Joe Scarborough is in fact human. So is McConnell, Ryan and the rest. When, we must wonder, will they look at what they are doing, and have been doing, in growing horror? Or will they ever?
Ideologues, left or right, are hard core in that they will cheerfully allow people to die, or even kill, for that ideology. Those more toward the middle of the bell curve, on either side of the mean, are the ones who can bring about the reforms we need, and perhaps even get us to the point where we are thinking for the welfare of the species instead of narrow political parties.
When I think of the unfolding horrors of the Trump administration, the Gestapo-like tactics of ICE, Bannon who wants to run us all like a juggernaut of death toward some 'christian' apocalypse, I think about those who can stop them.
Sadly, they feel about us EXACTLY as you feel about them. So, pragmatists from both sides, particularly those who are nominally Rs, must be the ones to point out the emperor has no clothes. I said what I said about Scarborough because I'm thinking about people a few decades earlier. Consider Oskar Schindler - basically a mediocre gold-digger type man who moved to Poland in the wake of the Nazi invasion to make his fortune as a war profiteer. Yet, today a tree in Israel's Avenue of the Righteous bears Schindler's name. The generations of those he saved from death in the camps are more numerous today than the Jewish population of Poland.
Consider Hermann Goering's brother Albert, who once joined a group of Jewish women ordered by SS to scrub the streets. When the Nazi officers discovered who he was, they stopped that activity. Albert saved people and steadfastly stood against the Nazi regime. Yet he was little more than a bon vivant playboy until the Nazis came to power.
Or even Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, who, in spite of his early support of Hitler, and even his oath, tried to end the Nazi horror in 1944 at the Wolf's Lair. He changed his mind. He turned out not to be a Nazi whore.
Perhaps Scarborough has a different motive than just 'seeing which way the wind is blowing.' Maybe he is genuinely horrified. I certainly am.
Skittles
(153,193 posts)but I certainly hope PART of his horror is realizing that by pimping for that orange piece of shit, he very much helped pave the way for the horrors to come

(37 posts)I think it's damaging our discourse. We're dealing with a real president here, who is real threat. Nothing fake about it. Trump's constant use of "fake" to refer to real news is pushing empiricism into the rabbit hole, and we're just following on down when we adopt that same, frankly juvenile, adjective.
