Cooper withdraws from solicitor general consideration

Source: Politico

Chuck Cooper, the conservative Supreme Court litigator, is withdrawing his name from consideration to be the next solicitor general, opening the door for the husband of Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway to be appointed to the role.

“I am deeply honored by any consideration that I may have received by Attorney General Sessions and President Trump for appointment as the Solicitor General, but I have asked them to discontinue any further consideration of me for that critically important position,” Cooper said in a statement Thursday.

Cooper, a onetime clerk for the late Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist, is a confidant of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and helped prepare him for his confirmation hearings. He was one of two finalists for the position.

In an interview on Thursday afternoon, Cooper told POLITICO that he wasn’t prepared to undergo the grueling confirmation process. “Life is too good and too short,” he said.

One of George Conway's claims to fame (apart from his spouse) is a leading role in pursuing President Clinton over the Paula Jones allegations.

for this so-called president's administration - maybe this guy didn't want that taint, which could be a future career-killer.

if that was true and those hearings meant any goddamn thing, DeVos would not be Secretary of Education and Sessions would not be Attorney General, and by the way, who was the democrat who voted for him? i know he or she doesn't come from my state, because we have no democrats in WA, certainly not in the Senate.

Here's Another Retrograde Disaster

Cooper is a close friend of Sen. Jeff Sessions, the Alabama lawmaker whom Trump has nominated to serve as attorney general, and helped to prepare Sessions for his confirmation hearings. Like Sessions, Cooper could prove to be a controversial pick. In addition to his role defending California's ban on same-sex marriage, Cooper also signed a brief on behalf of the federal government supporting Bob Jones University in its challenge to the constitutionality of an Internal Revenue Service policy denying tax exemptions to religious institutions that discriminate based on race. The university had argued that its ban on interracial dating was based on its sincere religious beliefs, but the Supreme Court upheld the IRS policy, by a vote of 8-1. And in 1986, as the head of the Office of Legal Counsel, Cooper signed an OLC opinion that argued that employers could reject job applicants with AIDS if they were concerned about contracting the disease.

17. Interesting that this comes the day after his history was featured on Rachael Maddow.

Who showcased his incredible white race centric background. He argued that Bob Jones University should be allowed to keep their religious tax exempt status, even though they forbid interracial dating. He lost. He argued that employers should be allowed to fire an employee simply because they had tested HIV-positive. He lost.
