Frustrated residents seek response from Sen. Cory Gardner

Source: Durango Herald

“I pay taxes, which pays for (Gardner’s) salary, his health care, and he can’t even answer his phone,” said Durango resident Lauri Costello. “It’s not a democracy when people don’t have a voice.”

Since the election and subsequent inauguration of President Donald Trump, many of those in attendance Tuesday have called their locally elected officials to express a range of concerns.

Most people standing outside Gardner’s office near Office Depot said such things as Trump’s nominees for key Cabinet positions, environmental policies and basic human rights have prompted them to call or write at least once a week.

All said Gardner has failed to respond in any meaningful way – in contrast to Congressman Scott Tipton, a Republican, and Sen. Michael Bennet, a Democrat – and that attempts to contact a representative in the Durango office have continually been unsuccessful.

I do not like it, I do not approve and I am totally outraged by this behavior, but I see the rationale. They have gotten nothing but more outrageous with every outrageous act. No one holds them accountable, and their constituents (especially those in their specially gerrymandered districts) keep returning them to office. They breach constitutional law, they shut down the government, they attack personal freedoms, they are corrupt, they are thieves and they even read from Dr. Seuss...and they keep getting reelected.

They figure they have absolutely nothing to lose, and they are going to push this as far as they can.

“Ignore” is Gardner’s trademark response. Sometimes it’s “Ignore and Confound”.

He was a freshman congressman when he held an open house at his local office, and he was surprised by the sizable crowd that showed up. When it was my turn to greet him I took his hand and asked him to explain his boasted co-sponsorship of Todd Akin’s “redefine rape” legislation; he withdrew his hand and said that answer required a private conversation; I insisted that his statement had been public so his answer to my question should also be public. He told me to make an appointment and hastened to move to someone else. His staffer was standing nearby, so I immediately went to her and asked for an appointment; she took my name and contact info and said the office would be in touch. After a week of not hearing from them I stopped in and was told that I was on a very long list and would have to be patient. Uh huh.

A month later, I was with a group of people delivering environmental concerns to his office. His staffer listened, then took everyone’s contact info and repeated the promise to respond. Two weeks later none of us had received any communication so we went back to his office. This time we were told that, due to the high number of matters requiring the congressman’s attention, any questions had to reference the specific designation (e.g., HB234xyz); questions about something not yet under congressional consideration weren’t likely to receive any attention. To no one’s surprise, none of us ever received any response from Gardner or anyone in his office.

Gardner is not comfortable in public settings where he is not in complete control, he very much prefers tight scripting. In one instance at a town hall where high unemployment was discussed, he responded to a woman’s question about an abusive employer with “Get a better job.” He hated that video of that exchange made it to Huffington Post and other national media. He relocated his local office from its easily accessible location to a site that was nowhere near bus routes, then moved it again to a building housing judicial offices, complete with metal detector.

As Senator, he moved into the local office previously occupied by Mark Udall. It’s accessible, but he isn't. And his email and snailmail correspondence with constituents is predictably boilerplate.
