Haley slams Obama for not blocking UN measure against Israel

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley assailed the Obama administration on Wednesday for failing to block a U.N. Security Council resolution that condemned Israel’s settlements in east Jerusalem and the West Bank. She pledged to reject future measures that she said unfairly targeted the Jewish state if confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s U.N. ambassador.

Haley told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during her confirmation hearing that if she’s approved for the post she won’t go to New York and “abstain when the U.N. seeks to create an international environment that encourages boycotts of Israel.”

She told the committee the U.N. resolution was “a terrible mistake” that makes a peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians harder to achieve.

Haley also said the U.N. has a “long history of anti-Israel bias,” and that during the most recent U.N. General Assembly session, the international body adopted 20 resolutions against Israel “and only six targeting the rest of the world’s countries combined.”

6. Haley and the right wing ambassador to Israel nominee will ultimately make things harder for Israel

The fact is that the Obama administration has consistently used the respect that other countries have for it to soften or avert various actions against Israel. It is not clear that the US could do that if we are seen as blatantly biased.

On a different level, that bias will make things tougher for Netanyahu - as Tom Friedman said in the q&a session with Kerry at Davos yesterday:

QUESTION: Just quickly on this, that if Trump actually appoints his bankruptcy lawyer as ambassador, for the first time Bibi will have an ambassador from America that’s to his political right. I mean, we’ve never had an American ambassador anywhere near there. And I dare say he will miss you a lot, because I suspect – (laughter) – he goes into many cabinet meetings saying to the far right there, “Look, I’d do this, but John Kerry, that – he and Obama – I mean, I would do this, of course.” But they’re not going to have you as an excuse anymore.

< His question goes on to speak of the impact on the Jewish community. >

And when the debate was around two states, the debate within the American Jewish community was right/left – you think the line should be here; I think it should be there. But when it moves to one state, the debate will be right/wrong. And when that happens, you will fracture every synagogue and every Jewish institution in America, and, I would suggest, all over the world. And I think we’re close to that. So thank you on behalf of this one person for drawing that redline.

Haley is playing politics, not considering what our values here should be or the impact on the world -- or Israel.

Gov. Nikki Haley and fellow Republicans seem to like segregation, they should go move to those settlements!
