The Beach Boys will headline the Black Tie and Boots inaugural ball

Source: The Washington Post

“The Beach Boys,” that prototypical all-American boy band founded in 1961, will perform at the Texas State Society’s “Black Tie and Boots” inaugural ball on Jan. 19, according to several people close to the planning of the quadrennial bash.

“Everyone loves the Beach Boys, right?” said one individual, adding that the headliners, who it had been previously reported were mulling over an offer to appear in Washington during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration festivities, were a “great act.”

Last December, a representative for the band, which since 2012 officially includes original member Mike Love and longtime member Bruce Johnston, told Billboard magazine that the group had been asked to perform but “no decision has been made at this point as to how or whether they will participate.”

That hesitation has become old hat in regards to this year’s inauguration. So far, the 2017 festivities have been a tough sell for those entertainers seeking to juggle an increasingly, er, opinionated fan base and any perceived political affiliations. Most recently Broadway star Jennifer Holliday backed out of singing at the official welcome concert due to swift backlash from her fans following the announcement that she’d be participating. And the B-Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen cover band, backed out of performing at Thursday’s Garden State Inaugural Gala.

The first time was in 1978 when they really were the Beach Boys: Brian Carl and Dennis Wilson, Al Jardin and Mike Love. Bruce Johnston was also there.

The second time was about ten years ago. It was a few guys and Love and Johnston. Love may have the right to the name, but it's not the Beach Boys, any more than it was Herman's Hermits when I saw them with Peter Noone and some guys who weren't even born when they had their hits.

"Grass Roots" (only singer Rob Grill, using the Monkees backing band) plus "Herman's Hermits" (guitarist "Lek" Lekenby from the original band and that was it...son't remember who handled vocals or if any of the Monkees backup band pitched in).

When the Interior Secretary shut that down, I got to see the Mamas and the Papas play to an audience of 2 or 3 dozen in the parking lot of RFK Stadium on the 4th. Spanky of Spanky & Our Gang filled in for the late Cass, and Mackenzie Phillips filled in for Michelle. I stayed for two shows. Good times!

From what I read, there was not a formal "dismissal"...Love just booked a boatload of gigs that did not include the trio of "real" Beach Boys. Wilson went on record as saying that he would have liked to continue, and if he did, the Inauguration gig probably would not have happened (or it would have, without his participation).

Well, I’m not bragging, man, so don’t put me down
But everyone I know thinks I’m a real ass clown
When I get into my car, you know, I don’t even try
If I see you need a lift, I just wave bye-bye
It’s my little douche coupe
You don’t know what I got

Just a little douche coupe, man, as you can see
The stereo plays nothing but Kenny G
When I pull in front of you, man, I become a jerk
I drive super-duper slow to make you late for work
It’s my little douche coupe
You don’t know what I got

It’s got a combination clutch and four-on-the-floor
And late at night I rev the engine right by your front door
And if that ain’t enough to make you flip your lid
There’s one more thing, I got a big sub-woofer

I park in handicapped, though I walk just great
And I always blast my horn when picking up my date
And just in case you think that I’m a caring chump
Bumper sticker on the back says I’m voting for Trump
It’s my little douche coupe
You don’t know what I got

Ironically enough, in 1986, the Beach Boys were banned from performing at a White House celebratory concert (July 4th? Memorial Day? Can't remember) by Interior Sec. James Watt because they promoted drug use.

I think they still player afterwards, and Watt later went on to resign after his, "I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple on my staff" remark.

32. THe first real concert I ever saw was the Beach Boys
Tue Jan 17, 2017, 05:30 PM
Jan 2017

Delbert McClinton was the opening act. I say "real" because it was the first concert I purposely bought a ticket to go see in a big arena. I don't count all the elementary school field trips to see orchestras or church-sponsored events that I had to go to.

it was 1981, I was 17, had already graduated high school and had a 10:00pm curfew. I happily lied to my step-asshole as I left for the show knowing I'd break curfew. The BBs hadn't even gotten on stage by 10. I looked at my watch and laughed as 10 sailed by.

I thought the show was great, they played everything I wanted to hear. I didn't know about new members/old members/real members etc...I just wanted to hear the Beach Boys.

Got home and was met at the door by step-asshole. Grounded for life again lol. "The point," he said, "is if you don't come home on time I have to get up out of bed to let you in."

Not "we worry about your safety out alone late at night" or "Our religious convictions prohibit entertainment after a certain hour" Just "It's a pain in my ass for you little bastards to be actual people. Conform better!"

So I said, "well let me have a key and you can sleep in peace and I'll let myself in" but that would be giving up way too much control so his reply was "Fuck you! You're not getting a fucking key!" (he swore a lot when he wasn't around the church people. They never had a clue) to which I said "You'd like that huh?" and he slammed me against a brick wall and held me there, choking me with his forearm and then mom came out and pulled him away.

I left home a few days later and never went back. Still fucking hate that guy.

But the Beach Boys were cool.

35. James Watt and the Beach Boys
Tue Jan 17, 2017, 05:41 PM
Jan 2017
James G. Watt

....
Other controversies

From 1980 through 1982, The Beach Boys and The Grass Roots separately performed at Independence Day concerts at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., attracting large crowds. In April 1983, Watt banned the concerts, on the grounds that the "rock bands" that had performed on the Mall on Independence Day in 1981 and 1982 had encouraged drug use and alcoholism, and had attracted "the wrong element", who would subsequently rob attendees of similar events. Watt then announced that Las Vegas singer Wayne Newton, a friend and an endorser of President Reagan and a contributor to the Republican Party, would perform at the Independence Day celebration at the mall in 1983. During the ensuing controversy, Rob Grill, lead singer of The Grass Roots, stated that he felt "highly insulted" by Watt's remarks, which he termed "nothing but un-American."

The Beach Boys stated that the Soviet Union, which had invited them to perform in Leningrad in 1978, "obviously... did not feel that the group attracted the wrong element." Vice President George H. W. Bush said of The Beach Boys, "They're my friends, and I like their music." Watt apologized to The Beach Boys after learning that President Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan were fans of the band. Nancy Reagan apologized for Watt. The White House staff gave Watt a plaster foot with a hole for his "having shot himself in the foot."

At the 1983 event, Newton was booed by the audience when he came on stage. The Tonight Show host Johnny Carson poked fun at Watt's last name, saying "James What? What?"

But then Trump specializes in brands that don't deliver. This is just another Trump empty shell promotion.

I hope Brian issues a statement on behalf of himself and the memory of this two brothers emphasizing noninvolvement.
