More than 30 Democratic lawmakers now skipping Trumps inauguration
Source: The Washington Post
A growing group of Democratic lawmakers will boycott President-elect Donald Trumps inauguration Friday as a protest of Trumps worldview and his criticism of civil rights icon John Lewis, congressman of Georgia.
There are now more than 30 House Democrats 35, at last count who have declared that they will not attend the inauguration on Capitol Hill this week. The number rose sharply after Trump tweeted Saturday that Lewis is all talk, talk, talk and should finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner-cities.

(60,075 posts)As the transition of power is a hallmark that must be honored, this is not a decision I make lightly. Its not my intent to protest the election results or to make a statement about policy. I will not be attending the inauguration because I believe the office of the President deserves our respect, and that respect must begin with the President-elect himself.
For the last ten weeks, President-elect Trump has continually denigrated the office of the President by using his bully pulpit for insult and ridicule. Since he made his ignorant comments about Congressman John Lewis this weekend, I have heard dismay from hundreds of constituents. Thousands more have contacted me over the past months regarding his shameful remarks about women, the disabled, immigrants, and countless others as well as his continued praise of a hostile foreign leader.
This is not normal. It is an embarrassment to our country and to the office of the presidency, and we must send the message that this behavior is not acceptable from the leader of our nation. Not attending the Inauguration is one way for me to do that.
My representative is Andy Barr R-6 Ky He will be there scattering rose petals on the ground in front of Trump as he enters the stage.

(1,736 posts)I just wrote my Democratic Rep Ron Kind to ask him to speak out publicly about the John Lewis incident. I am going to write him again to request that he not attend the inauguration. Fight now, fight later - a fight is on our hands. No reason not to get started.

(7,865 posts)However I will be more fixated on what they do as members of congress. If they do this as just a PR stunt and decide to vote with the republicans on social security, medicare, tax cuts for the rich, and gutting human services then I don't care what kind of photo ops they do now.
