Gene Cernan, Last Man To Walk On The Moon, Dies At 82

Source: NPR

The last person to leave footprints on the moon has died. NASA reported that Gene Cernan died Monday at the age of 82, surrounded by his family.

Gene Cernan flew in space three times, including twice to the moon. Cernan was big, brash and gregarious. And if he hadn't been lucky, he could have missed his chance to walk on the moon.

Cernan challenged himself his whole life. When he entered the military, he chose to be a naval aviator. Landing on an aircraft carrier is perhaps the hardest thing to do in aviation. Cernan did it because it wasn't easy. He said he was constantly pushing himself to do better and be better.

<...>

Cernan's final trip in space was also the final time NASA sent people to the moon, the Apollo 17 mission, which took off on Dec. 7, 1972.

is driving me crazy. It implies (at least to my warped brain) that Cernan is the last survivor of those who walked on the moon, not the last to leave his footprints on the moon.

But I suspect that the headline was not written by the author of the story.

e.g., John Glenn et al. We have lost 8 in the past 4 years. There was/is still much concern about Buzz Aldrin as well, after they had to airlift him from the South Pole.

Please save your fucking remarks for someone else. I didn't write the headline and LBN rules require using the headline.

No one has walked on the moon since he stepped into the LEM when the Apollo 17 mission was about to leave the moon. There are other living Apollo astronauts that walked on the moon (and there will a last living one), but Cernan was unarguably the last man to walk on the moon.

Buzz was being stalked by wacko Moon landing hoax crazy Bart Sibrel who claims no astronauts walked on the moon. He would not leave Apollo astronauts alone, shoving cameras and microphones in their faces.

The result? Buzz put his fist in Sibrel's face.

Yes! There's video:

To you, Gene Cernan, yet another with the right stuff.

We can't allow him to be forever the last. There should be at least a permanent research station. And of course there's Mars...

In 2011, after NASA ended the space shuttle program, Cernan joined Armstrong in testifying before a congressional committee to urge the government not to give up on space exploration. Cernan was particularly critical of the decision by President Barack Obama's administration not to pursue the Constellation program, which aimed to send astronauts to the moon and Mars.

"I don't think he fully understands what traditional America is all about because he didn't literally grow up here," Cernan said of Obama in a 2012 interview with Fox News.

There are a lot of things could say about Captain Cernan. He certainly had a reputation among other naval aviators. We're not perfect creatures. Many of my favorite artists and musicians were not the kind of people you'd want to be around very much. So what?

"We were voyagers" past tense.

Now we're at the mercy of silicon valley billionaires amusing themselves with rockets while NASA dicks around with a capsule they could have built fifty years ago.
