Oman says it accepts 10 Guantanamo Bay inmates at US request

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Oman said Monday it accepted 10 inmates from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay ahead of President Barack Obama leaving office, part of his efforts to shrink the facility he promised to close.

There was no immediate word from the U.S. Defense Department about the transfer.

Oman's Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the state-run Oman News Agency that it had accepted the prisoners at Obama's request. It did not name the prisoners.

The sultanate of Oman, on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, previously accepted 10 Guantanamo prisoners from Yemen in January 2016. Oman also took another six in June 2015. Meanwhile, Oman's neighbor Saudi Arabia took four prisoners on Jan. 5 and the United Arab Emirates took 15 prisoners in the largest-single transfer during Obama's administration on Aug. 15.

All prisoners at gitmo should be released before Obama leaves office, all are victims of torture.
The naval base itself should be returned to the people of Cuba.

Not that I disagree but we live in a country where the legislature ham-stringed this entire process. I.e., the fact that it requires Congress to appropriate funds to complete any closure. And Congress has refused to do so.

Last few tended to have nice premiums attached to their acceptance.

Some nobody wants. Because torture or not, they did bad things or knew a lot about the bad things others were going to do and decided they were okay with that.

If you torture a rapist, he's still a rapist. If you torture a killer, he's still a killer. The "remedy" in the legal system is to throw out the evidence, not because there's any kind of moral recompense but in order to deter the authorities from repeating their "techiques". That's not a small moral point. Torture has seldom been claimed to be rehabilitative.

Their original home countries refuse and/or can't guarantee their security? Our Congress blockades everything Obama. It's extraordinary how hard President Obama has worked to close that facility.

Would love for him to declare the bay a National Park as a parting gift to Congress & Cuba
