Dylann Roof Is Sentenced to Death in Charleston Church Massacre
Source: NY Times
CHARLESTON, S.C. Dylann S. Roof, the impenitent and inscrutable white supremacist who killed nine African-American churchgoers in a brazenly racial assault almost 19 months ago, shocking the world over the persistence of extremist hatred in dark corners of the American South, was condemned to death by a federal jury on Tuesday.
The jury of nine whites and three blacks, who last month found Mr. Roof guilty of 33 counts for the attack at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, S.C., returned their unanimous verdict after about three hours of deliberations in the penalty phase of a heart-rending and often legally confounding trial.
The guilt of Mr. Roof, who coolly confessed to the killings and then justified them without remorse in a jailhouse manifesto, was never in serious doubt during the first phase of the proceedings in Federal District Court in December. By the time the jurors began their deliberations on his sentence, it seemed inevitable that they would lean toward death, not only because of the heinous nature of the crimes but because Mr. Roof, 22, insisted on denying any psychological incapacity, called no witnesses, presented no evidence in his defense and mostly sidelined his court-appointed lawyers.
The decision effectively capped Mr. Roofs first trial for the killings on June 17, 2015, the Wednesday when, after six scouting visits to Charleston, he showed up in Emanuels fellowship hall and was offered a seat for Bible study by the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney. Mr. Roof sat quietly, his head hung low, for about 45 minutes while the group considered the meaning of the Gospel of Marks account of the Parable of the Sower.

I know he has absolutely no remorse, but I still don't want us to kill in the name of justice.

(14,449 posts)But look at the news of Charles mansons pending death. If Charles had the death penalty and died 25 years ago nobody would be talking about him now. It's a toss up.

(5,272 posts)that is a far more powerful message against hatred than letting him as you said, die as a martyr.

(36,821 posts)I'm ok with the death penalty but do not really care if he gets life without parole.
The death penalty can make him a martyr.
A 'Christian' martyr to his KKK, white supremacist pals.

(66,381 posts)That's what he wanted. His demented racist followers will have little Confederate flag shrines with his picture on it for years.
Better to have put him in an oubliette somewhere so everyone would forget about him.

(53,959 posts)Of course, there is an irony of sorts, given the death penalty has been (still is in some places) skewed against minorities, especially African-Americans, and he is being executed for murdering African-American people.
Will this make him a martyr? Who cares?! The people who would "martyr" him are fucking assholes too.

But, I don't fool myself that this has any deterrent value whatsoever.
This person's execution will do nothing to stop other nutcases from committing senseless acts of violence.

Fury, forgiveness at condemned South Carolina church gunman's sentencing
By Harriet McLeod | CHARLESTON, S.C.
White supremacist Dylann Roof, condemned to death for a mass shooting at a Charleston, South Carolina, church, heard forgiveness and fury at his sentencing hearing on Wednesday from grieving loved ones of the nine slain black parishioners.
Some victims' family members called the 22-year-old Roof evil and deserving of the death penalty for the June 17, 2015, attack at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest African-American congregation in the American South.
"I want your soul to burn in hell," said Gayle Jackson, a niece of 87-year-old victim Susie Jackson.
Others said their Christian faith required them to forgive. They echoed comments at Roof's first court appearance after the shooting, where several victims' relatives shocked the country with their merciful tone toward the suspect.

Wednesday's sentencing by U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel was a formality after the jury's unanimous verdict. Roof, who also faces a death sentence if convicted of state murder charges, is unlikely to be executed anytime soon due to a lengthy appeals process.
