(58,785 posts)be happening at all is stomach-turning. I missed where he said he would recuse himself from heading further persecutions of Hillary Clinton--to protect them from charges of lack of impartiality. He did not say he sees no reason at this point for further persecution as AG.

(2,380 posts)to watch Jeff Sessions -- in 2017! --go through confirmation hearings for a cabinet level post is just about as surreal as anything has gotten during this mess. And the rest of it had been Kafka-esque. But Jeff Sessions!
nevergiveup
(4,762 posts)I can not get my head around this slimy racist actually becoming our Attorney General......I can not bring myself to turn on the TV. I am old enough to remember lynchings in the South. This entire scene is surreal and numbing. As you can see by my rambling here my normal thought processes are fucked.

(22,651 posts)Sessions 'will cause crime to get even worse', activist tweets

Samuel Sinyangwe, an activist in New York, took issue with the link Sen Sessions apparently drew between criticism of the police, and an increase in urban crime.
In a thread tweeted to his 37,000 followers, Sinyangwe argues that Sen Sessions does not understand the problem - and neither does the all-white committee.

It's clear Sessions believes the "Ferguson Effect" is true and does not believe criticizing systemic issues w/in policing is warranted.
Sessions blames the movement for causing crime to rise. He's wrong. There's evidence police violence causes this. Here's the facts
Milwaukee study found after police violence, calls to police dropped in black areas. Stopped relying on police. https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/29/upshot/calls-to-911-from-black-neighborhoods-fell-after-a-case-of-police-violence.html (2/)
Wary of calling police, communities resolved conflicts on their own outside the system, without adequate resources/support. Crime went up.
The lesson being that 1) police violence is causing this crime increase and 2) we need strong, effective, non-violent alternatives to police
Sessions, in doubling down on aggressive policing, will cause crime to get even worse. Which will mean more aggressive policing, in loop.

Democratic Senator Richard Durbin challenged Sen Sessions on immigration, saying he would be unable to resolve the challenge of a broken system fairly.
The nominee responded that he could, and warned against a "cycle of amnesty". Here's a clip of the exchange:
