Riots over gas price hikes in Mexico turn deadly
Source: NY Post
MEXICO CITY Protests and looting fueled by anger over gasoline price hikes in Mexico have led to four deaths, the ransacking of at least 300 stores and the arrests of more than 700 people, officials said.
The countrys business chambers said the combination of highway, port and terminal blockades and looting this week forced many stores and businesses to close and threatened supplies of basic goods and fuel. The scenes of mass lootings came as parents faced the last shopping day to get presents for their children before the Jan. 6 Epiphany or Three Kings Day holiday.
Two people were found dead near looting in the port city of Veracruz. An official with the state prosecutor said late Thursday that the killers had not yet been identified. The official was not authorized to talk to the press and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Earlier, officials said a bystander was run over and killed by a driver fleeing police also in Veracruz, and a police officer was killed trying to stop robberies at a gas station in Mexico City.

They're protesting gas hikes by blocking highways where traffic is at a standstill and others are rushing in thier cars to stores to get food/gas - thus burning more fuel???

However, they've been incompetently and corruptly governed like much of South and Central American.

(58,785 posts)with people waiting in lines, driving around looking for a station with gasoline, etc. I read that rumors were that vendors were hoarding gas so they could sell for more after the price leapt. So people are angry all around, but a real problem seems to be that Mexico's refinery infrastructure is falling far short of need.
Mexico's economy really doesn't need irresponsible hits it's been taking from Trump.

(5,801 posts)IIRC, PEMEX used to be publicly owned, but wasn't it sold off and privatized?
Gee, who could have foreseen rising prices???
P.S. gas prices are already rising where I live...wanna bet we get back to $4.00/gal gas here so dump's cronies can profit?
The morons who voted in this predator must not have bought gas recently and noticed the difference between prices under Obama ($~2.00) vs. chimpy ($4+). When they are paying hundreds more a year to drive, they can thank dump and the rest of the 'pukes.

NOGALES, Sonora A spike in gas prices in Mexico prompted several hundred protesters to block railroad tracks here Friday, preventing freight trains from traveling north and south into Arizona and Sonora.
Border residents fear the jump in gas prices, the result of a law deregulating gas prices that took effect Jan. 1, will lead to a rise in other products and services. That could force border residents to cut back on spending that could also hurt businesses on the U.S. side that depend on cross-border shoppers.
Anger over the hike in gas prices boiled over this week throughout Mexico, sparking protests in cities throughout the country that led to looting in some places.
There have been at least six deaths reported as a result of the protests, according to the Associated Press.
