Kickoff of annual governors’ meeting sets stage for rancorous Medicaid debate
Source: The Washington Post
When three of the nations highest-profile governors kicked off the annual meeting of the National Governors Association here Friday morning, they did so inside a high-ceilinged, portrait-adorned room of the Old State Capitol, a towering brick building first constructed in 1705.
But when it came to the substance of the two-day summit of the countrys state executives, there was no mistaking that its all about 2012.
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman (R), the outgoing chairman of the NGA; Delaware Gov. Jack Markell (D), the incoming chairman; and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R), the host-state governor, maintained that the governors at this weeks conference aim to find common ground on issues including the economy and education.
That emphasis on bipartisanship dissolved and the deep divide between the parties during a contentious election year quickly became apparent the moment the conversation turned to the one issue that promises to dominate the conference: the Supreme Courts ruling on President Obamas signature health-care law and the decision facing governors on whether to opt out of the laws Medicaid expansion, set to take effect in 2014.

Currently, for a "nondisabled" adult to be eligible for Medicaid in Texas, a family of 4 must earn less than $231, per Month.
I made more than that when I was living in my van...why have a program, at all?
