Mitt Romney faces new round of calls to release tax returns
Source: The Washington Post
Six months after Mitt Romneys reluctance to release his tax returns tripped him up in the South Carolina Republican presidential primary, the now-presumptive nominee is once again grappling with whether to disclose more information about his personal finances amid mounting pressure from his opponents.
For days, Democrats have been demanding that Romney make public additional tax returns that could shed light on his fortune, which is estimated at $190 million to $250 million. President Obamas reelection campaign and its allies are hinting at nefarious activity, suggesting that Romney has been hiding information pertaining to his Swiss bank account and investments in the Cayman Islands. A scathing editorial in the New York Times this week pressed a similar case.
...
Even some Republicans are describing the Romney position as problematic. Former Mississippi governor Haley Barbour, a onetime party chairman, said this week that he would provide more than two years worth of documents if he were in Romneys shoes.

(13,141 posts)somebody who knows what's in those returns,
and knows exactly why Romney wasn't chosen for VP.

I think they do know something.
This is getting fun, like a good movie.
In 2008, when Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the Republican nominee, was considering Romney for his running mate, Romney reportedly sent McCains vetting team tax returns dating to 1985. Im a bit of a pack rat, so I had them all, the Arizona Republic quoted him as saying.

Seems like I have not seen McCain out for Romney since.
Anyway, I think you are right. Somebody on the McCain campaign has leaked this stuff.

(42,568 posts)If the information is in the tax returns, it must be pretty obvious or else they spent a lot more time going through Mitt's returns than gathering the most basic information about Sarah Palin.

was her main draw as VP candidate, obviously.)
There may be only one or two people who looked at Mitt's returns.
The confidence with which the Obama admin is pursuing this
seems to indicate they have some solid inside information. I'd
be very disappointed if they were being so dumb as to go out
on such a limb -- they're smart and savvy enough to know it
would be a potential disaster for Obama. (like the Bush military
service).

(7,403 posts)Would clear up the issue of when Romney actually left Bain Capital. Why? Because the tax treatment is different depending on whether you claim an active or passive management role in the enterprise. Romney also needs to release his State income tax return for 2010. Did he file in New Hampshire or Massachuttes? Why does that matter? Because he voted in Masachuttes for Scott Brown. If he paid the lower New Hampshire income tax then his vote in Massachuttes is voter fraud. We need this data to determine the level of trust we can have in Romney. Because Romney has not been transparent on these issues the natural instinct is to think that he is hiding some very embarrassing data -- or worse.
