After a fire and claims of anti-Muslim bias, police seek to tamp down tension on St. Louis street

ST. LOUIS • Marizela Ekic purchased her first home in August, a recent college graduate ready to set out on her own.
Within two days, the house on Zellie Avenue was little more than charred remains. Shortly after midnight on Aug. 29, a fire destroyed the 92-year-old home that had set vacant for three years, foreclosed on by the bank.
The house in the Boulevard Heights neighborhood, which backs to Interstate 55, sits across the street from a home purchased last year by Eyad and Laila Alnusour. They, like Ekic, are Muslim. A month before the fire, Eyad said, he got into a confrontation with another neighbor, who he said had been harassing Eyad and his family from the onset of their move-in.
“I hate seeing you all move into my neighborhood,” Eyad alleged the neighbor said during a heated exchange in July. The two men began shouting expletives and the neighbor allegedly punched Eyad in the back of the head, threatened to shoot him and to burn down his house. Eyad reached for a shovel to persuade his neighbor to leave.
